Hello everyone!
Welcome to my third blog post. Today, I will talk about inflation in Kenya and what it means for us.
What Is Inflation?
Inflation means that the prices of goods and services go up. This makes things like food, clothes, transport, and electricity more expensive.
When prices go up, your money buys less. For example, if bread costs KSh 50 today, and next month it costs KSh 55, that is inflation.
What Is Happening in Kenya?
In April 2025, Kenya’s inflation rate was 4.1%. This means that, on average, things cost 4.1% more than they did one year ago.
In March, the rate was 3.6%, and in January, it was 3.3%. So, prices have been slowly going up.
Here are the main reasons why:
- Food and drinks cost 7.1% more
- Transport cost 2.3% more
- Housing and electricity cost 0.8% more
These are things many people spend money on every day.
Why Are Prices Going Up?
- Food is less available – There is not enough maize, vegetables, and other foods.
- Fuel is more expensive – This makes transport cost more.
- Rent and electricity prices have also gone up a little.
Should We Be Worried?
Not really. The Central Bank of Kenya wants inflation to stay between 2.5% and 7.5%. Right now, 4.1% is still okay.
How Does Inflation Affect Us?
- Life becomes more expensive – We need more money to buy the same things.
- Savings lose value – The money you save may not buy as much later.
- Wages may not rise – If salaries don’t go up, people can’t afford as much.
What Will Happen Next?
Experts think inflation will go a little higher to around 5.6% in 2025. But this is still okay. Prices might stop rising if:
- The Kenyan shilling gets stronger
- More food is available
Conclusion
Inflation means prices are rising. In Kenya, inflation is going up, but it is still not too bad. It is important to keep checking prices so people can plan and save better.
