About me—Baran Eshghi-Esfehani

My name is Baran, and I am 13 years old, turning 14 in November. I am currently in grade 9 at Charles Best Secondary School. I have lived in Coquitlam, BC, Canada, for my whole life, with my mom and dad. My favourite subject to learn about in school is math because you get to expand your capacity of thinking, getting all sorts of new strategies and solutions to solve a problem.

When I was little, I would always watch rhythmic gymnastics. Looking up at all the athletes that were on my television screen, knowing that one day I would pursue my dreams and try this sport out. This led me to my passion. I started rhythmic gymnastics when I was 9, loving the sport so much that my whole life revolved around it, whether it was watching competitions at dinner or nonstop talking about the new tricks that I had learned. Even though some days were more challenging than the others, I kept on trying my hardest, pushing myself to my expectations while meeting new individuals along the way. Rhythmic gymnastics has really helped me become who I am today. It has also helped me build my strongest attributes in life, such as independence, determination, and confidence.

The word “community” to me means a group of individuals connected to each other through interests like sports and hobbies. Always making sure that everyone is safe and feels like they truly belong.

If I could have any job right now, I would want to be a rhythmic gymnastics coach. This sport has been a big part of my life ever since I was little. I still remember my first day, walking into the gym, extremely nervous as I watched the older girls perform their astonishing routines. That experience made me want to be a role model for the younger ones and to show them to never be afraid. Year after year I started gaining this love and aspiration for gymnastics. Becoming a coach will help me share my experience and give back all the valuable lessons that I have learned. Supporting and helping each one of the gymnasts accomplish as much as they can to grow, not just as athletes but as individuals.

Lastly, out of the three categories in the butterfly effect, I am most interested in inquiry. Before I came up with my question, “How do the differences between the Canadian and U.S. education systems affect students learning outcomes and opportunities?” I struggled to decide between action and inquiry. I was extremely curious about this question and wanted to learn more about it to discover whether the educational systems of these two countries are different in any way.
