Blog Post #1: How does fast fashion impact the environment, and what can we do about it?

Fast fashion has become a major issue in our world today because of how quickly clothing is produced and discarded. This question interests me because I love fashion, but I also care about the environment. I want to understand how something as common as buying clothes can have such serious consequences for the planet.

Fast fashion impacts the environment in many ways. For example, large clothing companies often use cheap materials like polyester, which is made from plastic and takes hundreds of years to decompose. The production process also uses massive amounts of water—making just one cotton t-shirt can require over 2,700 liters. In addition, many factories release harmful dyes and chemicals into rivers, polluting water systems and harming wildlife.

Another environmental issue is the amount of waste created by fast fashion. People buy clothing at low prices, wear it a few times, and then throw it away. According to the United Nations, the fashion industry produces around 10% of global carbon emissions each year which is more than all international flights and shipping combined.

However, there are ways to make a positive change. People can buy secondhand clothing from thrift stores, choose brands that use sustainable materials, or try to repair and reuse their clothes instead of throwing them out. Even small actions, like donating or swapping clothes with friends, help reduce waste and pollution.

Ultimately, learning about fast fashion has shown me that we all have a role in protecting the environment. By being more thoughtful about where we shop and what we buy, we can help make the fashion industry more sustainable.
