Hello everyone, for my inquiry project I chose the question, “how do changes in the environment affect whether a species adapts or goes extinct?” I chose this question because I love animals and nature. I’m interested in this topic for a three main reasons.

Firstly, it’s happening around us, living in British Colombia we are surrounded by all different types of wildlife, forests, mountains, oceans. Animals and plants are already dealing with changes, forests and oceans are getting warmer. These changes are forcing species to either adapt, move, or go extinct. Even small changes, like warmer winters are affecting all our animals.

Secondly, it impacts our future, this topic isn’t just about animals it’s about how we respond to challenges. That includes people, and communities. The choices we make now impact the next generation. If it is energy, land use and conservation what we do now will shape which species survive and which don’t.

Lastly, it affects us personally, this is not just a science issue it’s a life issue. Like food fewer pollinators like bees mean fewer croups and water deforested areas can’t hold water the same way that they used to because trees and plants play a crucial part in the water cycle. It even impacts our mental-health because being in nature is one of the best things to do to destress.

Understanding how changes in the environment affect whether a species adapts or goes extinct is a important thing not just for the species but us too.

Thank you for reading.
