  • Summary of action: Rima, Dara and I are planning on educating elementary school students about the awareness of first aid, and how crucial and helpful it might be. Obviously teaching elementary students about this subject is a little different than how it might be for teens and adults, so we are planning on incorporating some child-like aspects to it. For example, we are planning on making sing-alongs and showing fun interactive games and videos to actually engage the kids about First Aid. Our first step is to reach out to local elementary schools to see if they might be interested in this type of education and activity. To add, we all have our Standard First Aid certifications which helps us educate kids with a deeper and more understanding knowledge. Educating the younger children about this subjects helps them stay interested in important topics like how to take care of their peers in different ways, and teach their other friends about this knowledge.
  • TedX Video: One of the complexities we might face during this project is how simplified yet effective we can make these lessons. It could be very difficult to help kids understand such a serious subject effectively without scaring or intimidating them from it. Another complexity includes permission and trust coming from the other side. We need to ensure that trust is built between both sides and that all parties consent to these lessons which might take up a little bit of time.

  • Sustainability: Although this project may not seem sustainable at first, looking further into it might show it is. For example, teaching children about First Aid at a young age could have a positively lasting effect on them. This includes teaching their friends about their knowledge, developing an interest in the medical field and helping them grow into a helpful student in other areas of learning as well. These lessons sustain other parts of their thought process subconsciously, as they are younger and easier to teach emotionally. Another sustainable perspective could be the methods and lessons used during the activities. Other peers and teachers could use the same effective lessons to teach more and more students about the importance of first aid. Or, maybe this might show parents that this is a good piece of knowledge to incorporate into their life outside of school.
  • Opportunity: This kind of relates back to the points made on the sustainability part, because it also provides an an opportunity to ensure that word gets around and more awareness and education is spread about this subject. We can ensure the positive effects of our project by asking students about their opinions of the activities. For example, it is important to make sure the students are actually learning information, while it is not too intimidating or complex for them to learn. Another way is to observe during lessons and also ask about the teacher’s opinion as they know their own students best. The end result goal is to establish confidence in their ability to react and respond in emergencies in the future.

  • Expert: We could contact different First Aid instructors and ask them about their take on this, and how they would consider teaching the younger ages about First aid. Also, we could ask fellow teachers and parents to get a more parental and adult perspective on the matter; since they know how to teach younger children the best.

  1. Hi there! I found your inquiry very interesting and relevant, as I have also wondered in the past whether drinking water actually improves skin or if it is just a myth. I really liked how you organized your post and included images, as it made it very easy to follow. I also thought it was very creative how you plan to include QR codes to gather student feedback, since many students have cell phones and can easily access the survey. I feel that this is also a great way to keep your question relevant for the audience, especially because the inquiry is directly related to the students. I appreciated that you were thinking outside the box by including information about the negative consequences of drinking too much water. Overall, your project is creative, and I am excited to see your next inquiry post!

    1. Sorry, I submitted the wrong comment. Here is the actual one: Hello! I really like how your project idea is going. I believe that it is very important to teach younger students about First Aid early on, and the way your group plans to educate and raise awareness on First Aid is quite inspiring. First Aid is definitely a very relevant topic, since it is something that everyone should know about. However, many younger students have not been introduced to it. In your blog post, you mentioned that you might receive some “push back” or criticism. I disagree with this type of reaction, since I personally believe that if young people are taught how to react and respond in stressful situations, it can eliminate fear and help them take important action if needed. I also loved how creative your ideas of teaching first aid in a “kid-friendly” way. One little suggestion could be to include simple first aid kits or dolls that the kids can practice on, or even make small skits where they can act out in different scenarios. I think that this would make the lessons more fun and be a great way for the students to remember what they learned.

      1. Hi there! I really enjoyed reading about your First Aid inquiry project and think it’s a great idea to teach this to younger students. I especially liked how thoughtful you were about adapting the lessons specifically for elementary students, rather than just using the same approach as you would with teens or adults. Your idea of using sing-alongs, games, and interactive videos sounds very engaging and age-appropriate, and I think this will make students much more interested in learning about such an important topic. I also appreciated how you considered potential challenges, such as gaining permission from schools and finding the right balance between being informative and not overwhelming. It shows that you have put a lot of careful thought into planning this project. Overall, your initiative to educate younger children about First Aid is meaningful and valuable, and I’m excited to see how your project develops!
