Blog post 4:What are the causes of income inequality?

In my fourth blog post, I will be delving into the many factors which contribute to income inequality

Income inequality in Canada caused by many factors, a combination of economic, social, and policy related factors. A major cause of income inequality is the growing gap in wages between high-income and low-income workers. Jobs that require advanced education or specialized skills such as technology, engineering, and finance pay significantly more then most other jobs. since access to higher education is reliant on family income(or student loans), a lot of people are unable to receive higher education due to the expensive cost(1). this limits the opportunities someone has career wise and academically. The price of education shows how the existing income gap can cause even more income inequality.

Another factor is the shift in Canada’s economy over the past few decades. Because of new technology, A lot of middle class jobs which pay well and provide stability such as working in factories have been replaced with robot or workers overseas, which do the same job but cheaper. Those whom lost their factory jobs are usually forced to work in part time jobs such as uber which pay significantly less and have far less job stability, the loss of these jobs have caused those whom are middle class to suffer significant financial strain further increasing the income gap and income inequality(2). Income inequality can also be seen in foods, those whom struggle financially will opt to buy junk foods(mcdonalds) instead of healthy foods(lettuce) since the cost of healthy foods is usually more expensive, access to healthy foods should be a priority however, it is not and as a result is one of the causes of income inequality.

The cost of living in Canada also contributes to income inequality. Because of increasing rent prices, those whom are living paycheck to paycheck or are not doing financially well have less money left over after expenses(3), this means they have less money to invest and grow their savings. Someone who is making significantly more money can save and invest more which allows them to earn even more money from investments, they would also have more investment options because of their larger capital(money), this shows how those whom make more money have more opportunities(4). Furthermore, those whom were born privileged usually have superior financial literacy compared to those in the lower income class, this is usually because the parents usually have to be incredibly financially literate to achieve their current finances and that is taught to their kids, those on the lower income scale rely on schools to educate them on finances, however, most schools do not and if they do they only teach the baseline such as just budgeting(4).

  2. Hi Andre! I thought your post did a really good job explaining the main causes of income inequality, and the examples you used, like the cost of education and the loss of stable middle-class jobs, made your ideas really clear. I also liked how you connected income inequality to everyday things such as the price of healthy food.
One thing that could make your post even stronger is adding smoother transitions between your ideas so everything flows together more naturally, and including a few specific numbers or statistics could help support your points even more. Here are some resources for you!
