Blog post 5- “Why do people procrastinate even when they know it hurts them?”

To recap what I mentioned in my previous posts, procrastination isn’t usually about laziness, it’s often about overwhelm, lack of clarity, or fear of failure. Today, I’m going to be talking about some strategies to help someone who struggles with it.

One of the most researched and practical solutions for procrastination is structured time management. Techniques like the “Pomodoro Technique”, developed by Francesco Cirillo, break work into short, focused intervals (typically 25 minutes) followed by short breaks. This type of strategy reduces mental resistance because committing to 25 minutes of work feels manageable. There are also digital tools such as Todoist and Trello also help by turning large, overwhelming tasks into smaller, trackable steps. Research consistently shows that when tasks are specific and scheduled, people are more likely to follow through.

Goal setting is another very useful strategy. Studies on goal-setting suggest that clear, specific goals increase motivation and performance. Psychologist Edwin Locke found that people perform better when goals are challenging but clearly defined.

Another thing that plays a major role in procrastination is your mindset. Research by Carol Dweck highlights the importance of a growth mindset, believing that skills improve with effort rather than being fixed traits. Many people procrastinate because they fear not being “good enough.” Shifting focus from perfection to progress can lower anxiety and increase action. Self-compassion also matters a lot. Being overly self-critical after procrastinating often leads to more avoidance. By combining practical tools, structured goals, and a healthier mindset, you can reduce procrastination and build more consistent productivity habits over time.
