Throughout my action project, I faced a number of challenges that tested my patience, preparation, and flexibility. One of the biggest challenges was scheduling. Many of my friends and family were busy with graduation and other commitments, which made it hard to find someone to join me. When that happened, I chose to go on my own and brought my AirPods to make the experience more enjoyable. Another challenge was not having the right tools at first, like when I forgot to bring the trash picker and had to bend down to pick up each piece of litter. I later found it in my garage and used it on my next clean-up, which made things a lot easier. On one occasion, I also wasn’t feeling well, but I made sure to rest and take medication so I could still follow through with the project. These challenges taught me the importance of being prepared and staying flexible.

This action project has definitely changed the way I think. At first, I saw park clean-ups as just a task to complete, but over time, I started seeing the deeper value in what I was doing. For example, when I went to Mundy Park and didn’t find much garbage, I realized it was actually a good sign that the park was already well-maintained. It shifted my perspective from feeling like I wasn’t doing enough to appreciating the work others had already done. I also started to see how even small actions, like picking up litter, can make a difference. What mattered more was the effort and intention behind the action, not just the amount of garbage I collected.

This project has had a real impact on how I plan to make decisions in the future. It showed me that community work can fit into a busy schedule if I make the time for it and plan ahead. I now feel more motivated to keep volunteering, even after this course is over. I also want to involve others more by inviting friends, family, and classmates to join me when possible. The experience taught me that I don’t need to wait for a perfect moment or large group to make a difference. Taking the first step, even if it means going alone, can lead to meaningful experiences and personal growth.

The impact of this action project goes beyond just me. Locally, it helps keep our parks clean and shows others in the community that small efforts matter. When people see someone picking up litter, they might feel inspired to do the same or at least think twice before dropping garbage on the ground. Globally, while my clean-ups were small, they are part of a much bigger movement focused on protecting our environment. According to 7 Simple Steps to Organize a Successful Park Clean-Up in 2024, having an audience during clean-ups can encourage others to participate or become more environmentally aware (1). In the end, these small actions can spark bigger changes in both attitude and behavior, which is something I’m proud to be a part of.
