About me – Elizabeth Vdovina

Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth, I’m 14 years old, in grade 9 and this is my first year attending the Social Responsibility course here at École Dr Charles Best Secondary School. I feel very excited to begin this program so that I can learn and meet new people. I live in Coquitlam British Columbia and currently my favorite subject at school is French.

I chose to take this course this year because I’m passionate about making a positive difference in my community and learning more about it. I found out about this course when I went on the grade 8 tour around the school where they introduced to us this class. Right away I became very curious about how social responsibility works in real life and signed up. I hope this course will help me understand and be aware of global and local issues, and develop the confidence and skills to take meaningful action. I’m also excited to work with others.

My strongest trait is empathy. I really try to understand what others are going through and support them in any way I can. Doing that, helps me connect with people and work in groups very well, especially when we’re trying to solve problems. I think that being empathetic allows me to be a better listener and teammate, especially when working toward goals that impact others.

To me “community” means a group of people who support, respect, and care for one another. Whether you know the person very well or not at all, you should still have the same respect, carness and support. It’s also about sharing values, helping each other through challenges, and celebrating each other’s successes to make each other stronger people. A strong community makes everyone feel seen, heard, and included, no matter who they are.

In a way, that the perfect best friend or even just person is like a reflection of that kind of community. Everyone has their different perspectives and opinions about a perfect someone. But for me, a perfect best friend is someone who’s loyal, honest, and supportive. They will never judge you, but they’ll tell you the truth when you need to hear it in a nice way. They make you feel safe being yourself, and they’re always there for you, in the fun times and the sad ones. But saying all of that, a best friend doesn’t have to be perfect and will never be “perfect”, everyone makes mistakes but that’s just how you grow, they just need to care and be real.

Lastly, I chose to do the Inquiry project for my first project. I was struggling to decide between action or inquiry but in the end I thought of a very good question for inquiry that I want to elaborate more on. It is: “what impact does social media have on the way individuals see and value themselves?” I chose this topic because social media is a big part of everyone’s life since everyone uses it. I’ve noticed how it can make people feel good or bad about themselves, and I want to understand why that happens and explain it.

Thank you for reading my all about me, I hope you enjoyed!
