Hi! My name is Ishani Balachandran, and currently, I am a grade eleven student at Doctor Charles Best Secondary. I have always been passionate about leadership, community involvement, and working with my peers to create positive changes in my community. Having the opportunity to attend a diverse, vibrant, and engaging school like Charles Best has enabled me to build meaningful relationships, develop strong intrapersonal skills, and make a positive impact in my community. My favourite classes include English, Law, and Marketing as they challenge me to think outside the box while also exploring my passions.
What am I most passionate about?
Ever since I can recall, I have always been extremely passionate about becoming a lawyer. Law shapes society, protects our rights, and enables each individual to express their opinions. My dream is to become a Criminal defence lawyer, a career I have admired not only because of my family’s background in law, but also because it allows us to create real change. To me, law is justice, fairness, equality, and the ability to create opportunities for those who are unable to fight for themselves. I hope to use my voice and skills to leave a meaningful mark on the world while standing up for others.

What is my strongest attribute?
My strongest attributes are being extroverted and highly communicative. Connecting with others, starting conversations, making new friends, and creating a space for everyone to feel comfortable is extremely important to me. Being outgoing allows me to build strong relationships, work well with others, and take on leadership positions. I also value listening just as much as talking, as I believe understanding different perspectives allows us to grow. These traits have shaped the way I approach school, leadership, and the friendships I have built. Having the ability to build relationships, make connections, and communicate effectively with others has allowed me to grow and strive to become the best version of myself.

What do I enjoy doing in my free time?
In my free time, I enjoy a balance of spending quality time with friends and family, staying active, travelling, listening to music, and giving back to my community. My friends also play an important role in my life because they inspire, challenge, and remind me to enjoy the little things. Being active, whether that means going to the gym or simply getting outdoors, allows me to stay motivated and balanced. Travelling is another passion of mine, as it allows me to experience new places and cultures while broadening my perspectives and knowledge. Music is something I turn to every day, whether I want to feel energized or relax. Volunteering also plays a huge role in defining my values, providing me with the opportunity to give back to my community, learn from others, and create positive changes in small yet meaningful ways. Altogether, these activities shape who I am and bring me purpose, connection, and joy.

Which one of the three categories of butterfly effect am I most interested in (currently), and why?
The aspect of the Butterfly Effect I resonate with most is the Inquiry section. I’ve always loved asking questions, researching important issues, and reflecting on topics that matter to my peers and me. In the past, I’ve explored inquiry projects that challenged me to think critically, creatively, and share my ideas through writing. This year, I am particularly fascinated by the connection between murder, justice, and the legal system. I often find myself wondering how justice is defined and carried out when it comes to violence, and how that relates to fairness, punishment, and morality in our society. Exploring questions like these excite me as they push me to think deeply, analyze various perspectives, and connect my passion for law to real-world issues. Through inquiry, I hope to continue exploring these thought-provoking topics and share insights that can spark meaningful conversations.
Overall, I am so grateful and excited to participate in Social Butterfly again and can’t wait to hear from everyone!
