Asmi Garg | About Me Post

Who is Asmi Garg?

Asmi Garg is a 14 year old high school freshman, living in Coquitlam, Canada. She hails from Punjab, India, and comes from a large family comprised of her grandparents, parents, cousins and younger brother. She attends one of the largest schools in the district, Dr Charles Best Secondary School, and has a passion for academics! This is evident in her recent milestone of winning top of her class at Laxmi Narayan Mandir Hindi School for the third year in a row, of which she is very proud of. Her favourite subject is science, and she is a lover of the earth, conserving energy in eco-friendly ways, and promoting her friends to do the same.

She remembers seeing others achieving so much in their lifetime, especially looking up to Michelle Obama, Margaret Thatcher, and her own immigrant parents, who sacrificed everything for her. She was determined to find her place in society, and now dreams of working in Palestine for UNICEF, to help others who are in need of her aid. In her free time, she loves to volunteer at her younger brother’s elementary school, teaching kids and helping teachers with their lessons.

Asmi Garg is a firm believer that community is not only a noun, but a verb. One’s belonging into a community comes from not only happiness but proving oneself as someone who is worthy of being a part of a community. Communities are not only formed in joy, but also in trying times of hardship. She quotes Anne Frank, someone who was a part of an underground community with, “No one has ever become poor by giving.”

She believes that, as a Hindu, her place in the community she lives in is as someone who engages constantly with those in need, fulfilling her dharma and living up to her generous family name. Her strongest attribute is being a generous person, as she believes her good deeds will come back to her, as she gives them to others. She and her family serve food to the homeless, to temple-goers, and to children every week, and she intends to continue this habit into adulthood. Her passion also ties into her culture, as she is a lover of history, and the good that comes with it. She believes that even in bad, there can be good, and even in sorrow, joy can be found. The Medieval to Renaissance era fascinates her, and she wonders what it could have been like to live in such an influential time, though she is infinitely grateful for her place in the modern world.

If Asmi could solve any world issue in 2025, she would create world peace, and make the earth a haven for all. She engages in activism, donation, and fundraising for the causes she cares about, and never hesitates to raise her voice against what she believes to be wrong. She would love to use this course as a way to bring awareness to what she holds dear, and is curious about what how her classmates see political issues. She believes that today’s youth are tomorrow’s future, and she strives to be the best person she can be to reflect that.

The category Asmi is most interested in for her Butterfly Effect project is an inquiry project. With this, she hopes to inspire her peers with what she creates, and is increasingly interested in educating them on the topic that she chooses to do. She looks forward to seeing what others have to share, and hopes she can do her best in this class!
