Blog post #1- “How does constant comparison with online content affect people’s confidence and self-worth?”

Social media is a part of almost everyone’s life these days, and it has definitely changed how teenagers grow and interact in society. But how does constantly comparing ourselves to what we see online affect our confidence and the way we value ourselves? That’s what I want to explore.

Mindful Social Media Use and Well-Being | Time To Log Off

This question interests me because I’ve learned that 64% of the global population uses social media, where millions of people share edited or idealized versions of their lives every day. For example, many influencers post perfectly filtered photos showing flawless skin or amazing vacations, while others share videos of seemingly perfect bodies or lifestyles. As people scroll through these posts and videos, they often compare themselves to these unrealistic images without even realizing it. This constant comparison can influence how confident people feel and how much they value themselves. Over time, being exposed to these idealized lifestyles can lead to lower self-esteem, body image problems, and even mental health challenges like anxiety and depression. I’ve also noticed that many people don’t realize how much this ongoing comparison impacts their self-worth. I want to find out more about how this happens and whether social media platforms are doing enough to promote realness and support mental well-being.

Understanding how constant comparison with online content affects our confidence and self-worth is important and that is why this question interests me.It helps us become more aware of the impact social media has on our mental health. For example, learning how to not believe every single thing you see on there. By exploring this, I hope to learn how we can use these platforms in healthier ways.
