Inquiry Project Blog Post #1 – “What effects does social media have on today’s generation?

Hello, my name is Dylan Khakh and for my first blog post I will be explaining why I want to dive into the effects that social media has on today’s generation.

This topic really interests me because I see it all around me everyday, and honestly, I’m part of it too. I’m 15 years old, and like pretty much everyone I know, I use social media every day, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, you name it. Sometimes I catch myself wondering how different our generation would be without it. Would people talk to each other more in person? Would we feel better about ourselves? I think it’s a weird mix. Social media helps us stay connected and express ourselves, but it also creates pressure to look perfect, act a certain way, and always be “on.” The way I see it, it seems that everyone feels they have to constantly compare themselves to highlight reels of other people’s lives. I also notice how fast trends come and go, and how that affects how we dress, talk, even think. These might just seem like random thoughts, but it’s something I actually want to explore more deeply on what postive and negative effects different platforms have on kids aswell as young and older adults.

A second reason I want to take a deeper dive into this is because I have talked to a lot of people and gotten their opinion on if the world would be the same today as it was before we sad social media if it never exsisted. My parents have told me stories before of what life was like before phones, social media, videos games, and honestly it sounds like peace and no stress. However, everyone has a phone in today’s age, and after taking the time to think, I realized that kids today cannot even have a simple face to face talk without a phone. I think that there are many pros of social media,, like cool crafts, sports news, which is a good use of social media. However, the fact that people feel stressed, peer pressured, forced to look good, show only the high points of their life, is a very serious issue and by the show of it, these cons seem to be very hard-hitting and not helpful for the uprise of the new youth who are just getting introduced to this platforms at a younger and younger age.

Thank you for listening to my two main reasons on why I want to dive deeper into this topic and I cannot wait to ask for peoples opinions, aswell as research and find multiple studies on the goods and bads of social media and amount of technology access the world has today!
