Thank you for taking the time to read my first blog post! For my semester 1 project, I have decided to dive into the inquiry question “Do I shape my personality, or is it shaped by others?”
I have decided to dive into this inquiry question because personality is something everyone struggles with at least once in their lives. Identity is made up of many aspects, whether that’s personal (like hobbies, personality, and beliefs) or social (such as race, gender, and family roles). Aspects like height, hair/eye colour, and race are very easy to define. However, aspects like personality, doesn’t just come from those physical characteristics, you build them on.

I chose this research question because I wanted to grasp a deeper understanding on how people shape their personality into how they are today. This can include how you are raised, what your hobbies are, or – what I am most interested in – how other people influence it. Personality is such an important part of who we are, yet it can be difficult to tell how much of it comes from within us and how much comes from the people and environment around us. Personality gets us impressions in the future and guides us through different journeys. I often wonder whether my personality is something I build through my own choices and experiences, or if it’s unconsciously influenced by my family, friends, and the expectations of society.

Sometimes I feel that I am a different person around certain groups, or people, positive or negative. As I am confident of who I am, I want to understand how I achieved this confidence, and how I am able to understand more about what truly makes a person unique from different people, and how we can stay true to ourselves while still learning from others.
