Action Blog Post # 3

1.) Where are you with your action? (e.g. what involvement have you had so far? Describe with examples)

So far, my two peers and I have contacted 6 different elementary schools with a thorough explanation of our project. We included detailed information like the reasons, benefits, and our goal. We have heard back from 2 schools so far, one who agreed to our project and would love to work with us and another that wasn’t interested at all. Thus, we have started brainstorming ideas of materials and supplies that can be used to help make our project come to life. Moreover, we are still waiting on the school that agreed to email back to schedule a time for us to meet and present. We are keeping in mind the comments and suggestions that we have received from other students in the class that can help make our project fulfill its highest potential.

2.) What are some successes that you have had? Provide specific examples.

Some successes that we have had was reaching a school who agreed to collaborate with us for this project. We had made lots of planning on which elementary schools we should email and picked ones that seemed close to our area. We brainstormed a formal email to send to each school that included all of the information, like the details of our purpose and how they can help us.

3.) What are some challenges that you have faced? Have you been able to overcome them? If so, how? Provide specific examples. If not, can you problem-solve some ideas that might work for next time or if a similar situation arises? Again, provide specific examples.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was figuring out how to make our project feel fun and engaging rather than just another presentation the kids wouldn’t enjoy. We also had to focus on presenting our lesson in a way that was memorable and easy to understand, so the students could truly learn from it instead of forgetting it quickly. So, we thought of ways to make it more fun. For example, we are planning on making a song for the kids to sing along to, creating friendly visuals so that the kids feel more encouraged to feel brave during scary times. This process has taught us to keep going no matter what, whether its the challenges that step in our way or the successes that follow our path. Research says that training children at a young age how to respond in life threatening situation have helped build confidence, save lives, whilst addressing fears and how to handle them (1). Moreover, it aids in the process of helping them stay calm and react efficiently making them feel empowered and prepared to face any situations that comes their way (2).

4.) What are you doing next and why?

We are planning on hearing back from the school that agreed to work with us. Our next steps will be planning out our presentation on Canva or PowerPoint, and making up a rhythm or lyrics for a song. Furthermore, we will be contacting an organization like First Aid Canada or Red Cross to help us on this journey by providing some advice or knowledge that we can spare. These steps ensures that we are on track on working towards our goal which will help our project come to life!

  1. Hi Rima. I really love this idea; I think it’ll be very beneficial for elementary students to learn about safety and first aid. I’m sorry to hear one of the schools rejected you, but there are still others. I believe that it’s going to be a great program. One thing I recommend is to maybe talk to some professionals that are experienced in this sort of work just to help in case there are further complications or the schools feel that they are more comfortable with an experienced adult. Also, could you maybe explain more about how you would run the program itself and more of how it would work instead of just how you would put it together? I think that’ll also aid comprehension, and I’m also just intrigued by how it will be run. Overall, I’m so happy for you guys and wish you the best of luck throughout this project.

    1. Sorry, just to be more clear, maybe add a little more detail on how it’ll be run and some scenarios that could happen, as this “course” will be in session for these children. How could you teach them so they remember? Once again, love this idea and the post!!!
