Blog Post 7-“Should there be limits to freedom of speech?”

Hi everyone! Welcome to my final blog post. If you haven’t been following along with my post, I did an inquiry project with the question “Should there be limits to freedom of speech?” I’ve done my three rounds of research, and now I will be doing my final post.

What challenges did you overcome throughout this inquiry project? How did you go about
overcoming these challenges?

One challenged I faced while working on my inquiry project was finding reliable sources. Many people have different opinions on this topic. There were some sites I had difficulty because I couldn’t tell which sites showed both sides without them being biased or just is they were inaccurate to begin with. I had to compare information from one site to another to see if they had similar information and worked for both sides of the argument without it just focusing on one side in general.

How did this inquiry change the way you think?

This inquiry project gave me a better understanding of free speech. Sure, I knew both sides of the argument, but I guess I never knew how damaging free speech could be without limitations. I still have similar views from how I started but have a better understanding as to why, as well as how I will use free speech in the future.

How did this investigation impact your future decisions?

This investigation will affect how I communicate and share information with other in person and online. You never know what information is real or fake, and it is better to keep that information to yourself till proven to be true. This will limit the amount of misinformation that spreads rapidly everyday. It also will affect how I view different perspectives. Free speech is about being able to say your opinions and express yourself. This opens the discussion of people’s different views and perspectives on certain topics, and it is good to consider and learn from others.

What impact will this investigation have on others locally and/or globally?

I since any type of speech is pretty much considered free speech, stuff like hate speech is considered free speech as well. So, you can basically say anything whether its hateful or not, and it is still considered as free speech. This investigation can help others get a better understanding of what is appropriate to say and do in person and online. This will create respectful discussions and less violent speech and acts locally, and a balance in topics and understanding globally.
