All About Me

Hi! My name is Evelyn Joung, and I’m a Grade 12 student at Charles Best secondary. I live in Coquitlam, BC, and some of my favourite things to do are dancing, spending time with friends and family, and being involved in my school and community.

I am a Korean-Canadian, and my culture is a big part of who I am. One thing I value from my family and Korean culture is showing respect to others, especially older people. Family gatherings, sharing food, and spending time together are also important traditions in my family.

One of my biggest passions is dance. I’ve been part of God’s Image, a Christian dance academy, since Grade 3. Dance has helped me become more confident, especially when performing in front of large groups, and it has given me opportunities to meet people, travel, and serve my community.

Surprising fact

Something that might surprise people about me is that I used to be really nervous around crowds and public speaking. I would get nervous about speaking in front of a lot of people and sometimes worry about what others thought of me. Over time, especially through dance, leadership, and being involved in different activities, I slowly became more comfortable putting myself out there. Now, I actually enjoy talking in front of people, leading groups, sharing my ideas, and meeting new people.

My strongest trait

I would say my strongest trait is that I’m outgoing and willing to take initiative. I’m not afraid to speak up, share my ideas, or step in when something needs to be done. Whether it’s planning an event, working with a group, or trying something I’ve never done before, I like being someone who can help get things started. I also enjoy bringing people together and making sure everyone feels included. I think being outgoing has helped me become a better leader because I’m comfortable communicating with different people and encouraging others to get involved.

What does community mean to me?

To me, community means having people who support each other and contribute to something bigger than themselves. I think a strong community is one where everyone feels included and knows that their actions can make a difference. I try to be involved in my community through volunteering, school activities, church, dance, and leadership. I enjoy helping with events, working with different people, and creating opportunities for others to connect.

My global community

A global community means recognizing that even though people live in different places and have different cultures, we are all connected. Small actions can spread further than we realize, which is one of the reasons I think the Butterfly Effect is so meaningful.

My butterfly effect category

The Butterfly Effect category I’m currently most interested in is action. I like the idea that even a small action, such as helping someone, volunteering, or including someone who feels left out, can create a bigger impact over time. I want to use my leadership and outgoing personality to make positive changes around me, even if they start with something small.
