Hi, my name is Mavis and I’m 14 years old, turning 15 in June, and I will be graduating in 2030! I live in Coquitlam and I attend Dr. Charles Best Secondary. This is my first year in Social Responsibility. My favourite school subject is English, and my least favourite is Math because numbers just don’t sit right with me.
Share some of your culture or family values, traditions, laws or norms that might be interesting to people who do not know your culture.
I was born in Vancouver, British Colombia. My ethnicity is Chinese, but my family is specifically from Hong Kong. I live with my mom, dad, and younger brother. A family tradition that my entire family keeps is that every year we make mooncakes. Specifically snowy mooncakes, which are like mochis. The women of my family always come together and make them.

A family value we have is our faith towards Jesus Christ and our Christianity. Ever since I was born, I have gone to Westwood Alliance Church. My church is my second home. Growing up, I was a part of the Children’s Choir and did performances every Christmas! Now, being too old for the Choir, I am a teacher’s assistant for them, and I sing on the worship team. Recently, during the summer, I got baptized and I became a member of the Alliance, knowing that giving my life fully to God is something I will always think of first. Even if letting myself go and trusting God’s will and plan is hard, I will full heartedly follow him and love him.
What is one thing about you that might surprise others?

One thing you wouldn’t know at first glance about me is that I really enjoy hockey. I don’t play and have only played once or twice as a young kid. I enjoy watching it, whether it’s recreational or Olympic level, hockey is always a joy to watch. Especially earlier this year, when the 2026 Winter Olympic brought back NHL players into their games. Even when my team, the Vancouver Canucks, had their worst run in the recent decade, I still really enjoy it. My younger brother plays for the Coquitlam Comets. Even if he doesn’t always preform well, I always try to show up to his games and support him!
What is your passion?
You could totally say my passion is hockey, but my true passion is dance. I love dance so much. It takes up all my after-school time, meaning it also takes up all my free time. I do it for 5 days a week, for 16.5 hours. I dance at Tri-City Dance Centre and I am in the Professional Training Program (PTP). The PTP trains dancers to have better technique, style and knowledge of dance. I’ve been in this program for about 5 years now, and I’m not planning on quitting. These past years have really shaped who I’ve become today. Dance has helped me understand others and how they show emotion, it has helped me with movement and stamina, and most importantly is that it has helped me become a better person towards my peers. I am forever thankful for my teachers and all their patience and training!

What does the perfect “best friend” look like to you?

The perfect best friend for me is someone who has similar values as me, someone who is loyal and truthful, and someone that I can talk about literally anything and everything about. My values are determination, trustworthiness and responsibility. I value someone who has determination so that I know that we both can work on a goal together and help each other through. Someone who is trustworthy will value you and your friendship. If they know that I’m doing something wrong, I hope that they can be truthful about it and tell me. Lastly, I really value responsibility because I think that it is super important that people take accountability of what they do. Whether it’s good or bad, taking responsibility is very important. All in all, someone that will offer their shoulder for me to cry on, and vice versa, is my perfect best friend.
Which one of the three categories of butterfly effect are you most interested (currently) in and why?
The category of Social Responsibility I am most interested in right now is the Inquiry Project. I have so many questions needed answering and I have no desire to search them up in my free time. But now that I have some sort of motivation, I feel that I will be determined to figure out the answer to a certain question. Though I chose Inquiry, I really look forward to the days that I will have more time to myself so I can do the Action Project. Overall, I’m super excited to be a part of Social Responsibility!
Thank you for reading, and I hope you got to know me a little bit better!
