Hi! My name is Mikayla Wong, and I am a Grade 12 student this year. I live in Coquitlam, BC and I attend Dr. Charles Best Secondary School. I really enjoy reading, especially mystery, science fiction and fantasy books. My favorite subjects are Biology and Mathematics even though I probably won’t go into sciences in post-secondary.
One thing about me that might surprise others is that I was in Vancouver All Stars cheer for 4 years. My position in stunts was a backspot and my favorite part of the routine was the pyramid or dance section. I learned so much in this sport, and it made me more disciplined to keep up on my fitness, since it requires a lot of endurance and strength. I loved getting dressed up every competition and traveling different places for them. Putting on my uniform and doing my hair made me feel proud of what I have achieved with my team. Even though I am quiet in person, I loved performing on stage with my team. I gained so much confidence doing my best up there, and I also loved being part of a team, knowing that my role was as important as everyone else’s.
One of my passions is connecting with kids, sometimes through volunteering. I help out at my church on Sundays every month, and in the summers, I volunteer for a week at a bible camp called VBS, where we help the kids engage in games, crafts and learning stories about the Bible. I also love to spend time with my cousin’s kids, and because we live so close, I have so many opportunities to have fun with them.
A job that I have wanted since I was in middle school is to be a dentist or a botanist, which is someone who studies plants. Now that I have tried all of the science courses in high school and have explored more business courses, I have discovered that I am more analytical and logical because I like working with numbers, rather than a creative and hands-on person. There are different types of ways to work with numbers and calculations, for me it’s either the physics and chemistry way or the math and business way, which I think I am better at the latter.
When I have free time to relax, I like to listen to music, watch movies and read. My favorite artists to listen to are Taylor Swift, Madison Beer and worship songs from Hillsong United or Elevation Worship. I also enjoy listening to instrumental music from films quietly when studying. My favorite movies are from the Marvel movies. I know there are a lot of movies and TV shows that come from the MCU, but I love how there are so many complex characters, all with very different background stories. There are parts of those movies all over the globe and I love to see the diversity of every movie. My favorite movies that I would recommend as great action films include Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: The Winter Soldier because there are many different storylines in those movies that come together at the end.
If I had to choose between being the worst person on the best team or the best player on the worst team, I would want to be the worst person on the best team. Having other people around me who are more experienced or skilled than me will help me grow in that area and become a better player for whatever team I am on. I do have first-hand experience at this, because when I played volleyball in middle school, I wasn’t the strongest on the team, but through practice with better players, and watching how they react to the ball coming towards them at different angles.
I am currently interested in doing an inquiry project because I have a few topics that I want to explore. I always have ideas that I want to learn about, but now I have a project where I can actually start to research and study about without, because now that I am enrolled in this course, I feel motivated to explore new ideas.
