Hi, my name is Diya, I’m a 16 year old student at Dr. Charles Best Secondary in Coquitlam, BC. My favourite subject is Science because there is so much to learn about. A little bit about me is I was born in India, and I moved here when I was only 6 months old. While I’ve grown up in Canada, I have always believed Indian traditions are a big part of me.

A big part of who I am is my culture, I love celebrating and honoring my family traditions. Something from my culture that other people may not know about is a festival called Navaratri. It is one of my favourite Hindu celebrations because it revolves around dressing up and dancing. The attire is called a Chania choli which is a long skirt with a crop top. They come in many different styles. Another big part of my family values is to be around family and friends. We believe it is important to surround ourselves with people we love. My whole life I have been surrounded by my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Every weekend I spend time with them. One of the most important person in my life is my cousin, we are only 4 days apart.

One thing about me that may surprise others is that I love being around people specifically my family and friends. I am often shy and closed off, but when I get to know someone, I open up. I love spending time with the people I am close to and feel I can be myself around. Additionally, I feel more comfortable around them as I get to know them better. Even though I way not be the first person to start the conversation I love getting to know others.

The perfect best friend is someone I can be myself with, anytime. With my best friend I do not have to pretend to be someone I am not while feeling valued for who I am. My best friend is someone who is always there for me, whether it’s when I am upset and I need someone comforting to talk to or if they’re cheering for my successes. She’s someone who’s been with me through my ups and downs someone I always want to spend my time with. I feel comfortable to talk to her about anything. A best friend is someone who brings out the best in me and pushes me to be my greatest.
If I could be doing any job right now, I would become a psychologist. This job really interests me because of all the different types of people I’d be able to work with. Specifically, I’d want to become a child psychologist, I love working with kids and volunteering with them. I often volunteer with child programs like gymnastics and science programs. Seeing kids grow and overcome challenges makes me want to be apart in supporting their well-being. While I’d have to put in a great amount of work, I think it would be worth it Beauce I am passionate about building a career where I can deeply understand their unique needs and have an impact in society.
