Blog Post #2 – Dental Clinic Volunteering

1.) Provide a summary of the action you are planning and how are you going to start.

Hello everyone welcome back to my blogs! Today I will be going into the planning stages of my volunteering so I will be able to start helping the community. Firstly, to start of my action I am planning to reach out to different dental health clinics around Vancouver. I will send them copies of my resume, including qualifications, skills, information, education and more. Not only, I intend to explain what my goal is, some things I hope to achieve and how I plan to help them. It is hoped that once I have been sent out via email someone will reach out and my volunteering will begin. I expect to do very small tasks too just shadowing the dentist due to my age and no qualifications. I shall be open minded, respectful, ready to learn and observe.

2.) One lesson in the talk is that ‘Everything is complicated’. Please reflect on this and provide some examples to support your reflection. Can you explain some of the complexity that you will face in your action

After listening to the insightful Tedtalk ‘The Elephant in the Room’ by Alison Stuart, I have realized that there will be a lot challenges in this action that is inevitable I will face. She explains many interesting points shifting my perspective into to many things from a different view. For example, she tells us that everything small still does create a change, but can be reversed. For instance, picking up small litter and someone continuing to pollute. She demonstrates the need to stay vigilant and determined. However, keeping this in mind some challenges that can arise due to my actions is communication in unfamiliar situations. To illustrate, dentist have training and experience so when put into the environment there can be language barriers, such as different medical terminologies I do not understand. Also, when they are explaining I might not comprehend what they are talking about. In result, creating the problem of communication in unknown situations, but I am ready to be flexible and adapt to situations.

3.) Is this action sustainable? Provide some specific examples to support your reasoning. Is this action providing opportunity? How will you ensure you are making the positive impact that you intend?

This action is sustainable because it requires time of commitment as well as lasting knowledge. When filling out the applications it is a minimal of three months of volunteering, a significant extracurricular that will take time out of other activities. Moreover, by doing this action it will have a lasting effect on me and others. To explain, by doing this I will gain experience and skills which I can use forever. Whether I choose to continue doing something dental or someone comes to me with a problem. As well, I will be able to share this information during Health Education Club. Hopefully persuading a professional to come share their experiences with others. Plus, before going to the office I will educate myself on different customs and practices to be respectful. In all, being able to creating opportunity for me and the others while starting impact by teaching others. Furthermore, as stated I am prepared to change and adapt to any problems that can start. Meaning, I am ready to make sacrifices to have a lasting project. In conclusion, I prepared for guidance, I am keen to share and change to start a positive and lasting action in a community.
