Women’s Misrepresentation In Media; Can It Be Fixed? | Blog Post #2

⋆⊱༻𖥸༺⊰⋆⋆⊱༻𖥸༺⊰⋆⋆⊱༻𖥸༺⊰⋆ Hello, and welcome! ⋆⊱༻𖥸༺⊰⋆⋆⊱༻𖥸༺⊰⋆⋆⊱༻𖥸༺⊰⋆

This is my second blog post concerning my inquiry project, and like the title states, my question revolves around how women are represented in media, whatever media that may be, and my question focuses on how common misrepresentation is, and whether there is a solution or at least, a cause behind it.

To really plan out and begin my research, I have decided to spilt my project into three categories of research:

  1. The investigation into the history of women’s representation over the years.
  2. Examination of women’s representation in contemporary media.
  3. Exploration of both the impact and the potential for change.

In brief, for my first point, I plan on looking into the history of fashion, politics, journalism, and film to see if there are any recognizable patterns or stereotypes. Or, if there is an evolution of misrepresentation. This kind of research will help me create a base for my understanding of the origins of women’s portrayal, and how they have impacted society’s overall perception of women.

To examine my second point, I will analyze modern films, political and journalistic coverage, sports coverage, and fashion magazines to explore how women are represented, by who they are portrayed, and which specific voices are given authority. This will be really interesting because it will help me identify modern misrepresentation, the use of stereotypes in our every day media, and it will help me understand how we develop as a society.

Finally, my third point will be an investigation of the influences of media illustrations on societal expectations, trends, gender equality, and opportunities available to women. Moreover, I will also look deeply into figures or societal influences that attempt to challenge gender stereotypes and create accurate representations. This will lead me to a possible answer, can women ever reach a society in which they can be perceived accurately, in which they are equal?

To help me find the information and the answers I seek, I found these sources that I plan on using or looking back on for this project:

Edet, Esther Uwanah. “Why the Media’s Portrayal of Women Is Both Predatory and Deceptive.” Medium, Fourth Wave, 24 Jan. 2025, medium.com/fourth-wave/why-the-medias-portrayal-of-women-is-both-predatory-and-deceptive-e2f4eccb243c. Accessed 21 Oct. 2026.

Fedorova, Angelina. “Stereotypical Women’s Representation in the Film Industry.” Arcadia, 27 Jan. 2023, www.byarcadia.org/post/stereotypical-women-s-representation-in-the-film-industry. Accessed 21 Oct. 2026.

Guber, Liz . “Sexism in Fashion Industry: Where Are the Women in Fashion?” FASHION Magazine, 28 Mar. 2024, fashionmagazine.com/style/sexism-in-fashion-industry/. Accessed 21 Oct. 2026.

Ross, Andrea. “Sexist Media Scrutiny of Women in Politics Spans Decades, Study Says.” CBC, 24 Dec. 2017, www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/media-representation-women-politics-1.4453407. Accessed 21 Oct. 2026.

Venturini, Camilla. “A Look at Women’s Invisibility in the Media.” Gmfus, 2024, www.gmfus.org/news/look-womens-invisibility-media. Accessed 21 Oct. 2026.

Finally, this is obviously I topic I’m passionate about, but I also think that it has some equally important weight for my community. When I finish this project for myself, I’ll untimely have a much better understanding of women’s portrayal in the media I consume, such as film, tv, books, news… It will encourage me to question and challenge biased perceptions and stereotypes. Moreover, I will become more careful with the way media surrounding me affects my perceptions. As for my community, this project can help raise awareness towards women’s invisibility in media, and how often stereotypes and gender inequality shows up even today. I hope that by sharing the information I find, I can encourage others to think a little more critically of the things around them, in part, recognizing the importance of diversity and authentic representation.
