Inquiry question: How can the different types of abuse in sports be diminished?
Why this is a question of interest: Recently in my french physical education class I learned a unit about the various types of abuse that happens in sports. I learned the many ways athletes can be taken advantage of by their trainers and the institutions they compete and play for. We also went into depth about why most athletes choose to stay silent instead of speaking out about the abuse. My teacher showed us many examples of abuse occurring in different sports and at varying levels. Example: at the national level or high school level. I learned that regardless of strength, gender or height, many athletes that may seem “bulletproof” can still face instances of abuse.

This led me to question how as a society we can improve the safety measures for athletes to prevent abuse in sports. Since abuse is very prevalent in sports, but not talked about enough, it leads me to believe this problem is often overlooked. I hope that with my research about this important subject, I can inform others in my community about it, provide resources for victims of abuse and influence athletes who have experienced abuse to share their stories. I believe talking about this major issue can prevent abuse from happening to other athletes.
