Blog 2: Can abuse in sports be diminished?

Project plan: How can the different types of abuse in sports be diminished?

Step 1) What are the different types of abuse in sports?

This step allows others to learn about the different types of abuse apart from the most common misconception that athletes can only face physical abuse. Additionally, this research will teach others about how each of the different types of abuse can affect and hinder athletes.

Step 2) What is the nature of the problem?

Learning about the nature of the problem will dive deeply into the different aspects of why and how abuse in sports is often not talked about. This includes the law of silence, athletes’ fear of speaking up and how companies and institutions value their image over their athletes.

Step 3) How can we prevent abuse in sports?

Educating athletes, parents and coaches on signs of abuse and prevention will help create a more positive environment for athletes. Through my research, others will learn what situations to avoid and how we can improve coach education concerning the safety of athletes.

How this question will have implications for other individuals and my community:

As many people in my community are involved in sports, some may have faced abuse in sports. My inquiry project can help them feel less alone, encourage them to speak up and give them resources for help. More importantly, my research can educate others on the different types of abuse, how abuse happens, the nature of the problem and how to prevent abuse by educating others. Not only will my research educate others, but it will also bring attention to an often-overlooked issue. Many athletes are suffering in silence and may not know certain behaviours exhibited by their coaches or mentors are abusive. Overall, talking about abuse in sports and opening up the conversation concerning the issue can help create a safer environment for athletes.
