Blog Post #1 – How does family dynamics affect the mental health and well being of an individual within the family?

Hi everyone! For the second semester, I will continue an inquiry project! My essential question revolves around the topic of mental health and family. I will be exploring the relationship between the two subjects and discover the factors that are involved. I think it’s important to look at family dynamics in order to understand a person, their life, their upbringing, and culture. It is also a topic I’m interested at looking at because of mental health. Initially, when I think of situations or things that can impact your mental health most people would say school, relationships, or work; but for me, I thought of family. This is because I think that good mental health begins in your childhood. When you’re a kid, your biggest role model is your family. That is what I wanted to inquire more about: how do family dynamics affect one’s mental health and well being within the family?

I chose to do this guiding question for my inquiry project because I wanted to do research on mental health by focusing on a perspective. That point of view is family. As we all know, every family is different. We all play different roles and have different dynamics. Whether you are an only child, the youngest, oldest, middle, or second middle, the structure of a family holds significant power over one’s mental health. I also appreciate how this question is opens up pathways for looking at family relationships, support systems, and the overall collective mental health within the family. I’m excited to do research on this inquiry, create sub questions, and how do dive deeper into it!
