Hi all!
Throughout my action project, with the mission of bettering the community through volunteering with elementary schools, I overcame the challenge of lack of challenge. I know that may have looked like a word salad, so to clarify, there were times when there weren’t any opportunities to volunteer with the elementary schools in the communities. To push through those hard times, I made myself more available to other parts of the community, like local medical centers. I did my best to help whenever possible, especially with babysitting which isn’t quite volunteering, but I know it was helpful to some of the parents to have a last-minute babysitter on call.
This action changed my mindset towards caring. It helped me understand how much help and preparation is needed for events at elementary and middle schools, which I’d never thought about growing up, we would show up, participate (or not) and leave. Knowing now how much effort must have been put into activities like sports day and end-of-year school carnivals for just my grade, I am beyond grateful to everyone who made those lifelong memories possible and I hope I was able to help make some of those memories for the younger age group.
I have always stuck by my parents’ sides at events in the past; however, after gaining so much experience and confidence in dealing with little ones from infants to ten-year-olds, I will be lending a hand much more often and whenever possible. I believe this action helped me learn about myself and unlock the possibility of a new career path.
I am not sure this action had a global impact; however, I know it benefited those local to me. I was able to take the stress off of parents’ shoulders having to worry about where their kids are and socializing and I was also able to teach little ones about things that interest me and how I got into it. I hope to continue to pursue this action throughout the next semester and the next years of my life.
