Hello everyone! This is my last post on my research of my inquiry question, “How do sports benefit people?” In this post, I will be talking about my last subtopic which is the social and future opportunities people can have from playing a sport. Why do sports hold such a significance in something that isn’t sports-related, such as finding jobs? How could athletes encourage other people to play sports? These are the questions that I will research in.

Significance Outside of Sports
At this moment, job positions and college applications are very competitive. Luckily, having played a sport can show numerous of traits that can tell others that you’ve dedicated time and endured pain in playing that sport. Some significant values can be teamwork, stress management, and problem solving. You have teamwork from communicating, working with, and relying on other people in sports to achieve common goals. This can apply to being able to easily communicate with others in college, and being able to work with people in jobs. Since stress is naturally a problem to all athletes, finding a way to manage and work through stress is also a natural skill. Elite schools want their students to be able to deal with stress, and sports is a great way to prove to them that you are capable at whatever they throw at you. Similar with jobs, deadlines, demands, and requirements can be quite stressful. Lastly, many problems occur when you are playing a sport. No one is perfect, and that goes the same for sports. Problem-solving is a strong value in sports since in most occasions, you would need to fix problems and mistakes in a short amount of time. Being forced to solve problems quickly, it is a great value and skill that people can have in all types of things, not just for jobs and college. (1)
How could athletes encourage other people to play sports?

Athletes could help others find the sport they love so they can stick to it for a while. Having a sport that you really enjoy can motivate people to keep playing it. You could try out those sports with them and remember not to pressure them to doing anything. (2) Remind them that playing a sport means that you get a higher chance of getting into school teams, which can count as participation. Being in a school team means you are a representative of your school, which is important for many people. (3)

Hi Poyau,
I find this topic interesting because I always thought those who are academically gifted and athletic are impressing. I know many people who do academically well and also play sports. I do not know how they can do well in both. When I ask them, they tell me they have good time management. So like you mentioned about the job interviews, I agree that those who play sports are better applicants than those who do not. Since most likely, they have better time management. A question I have is: Does having more extra activities cause people to have better time management? I think those who have more going on end up with more free time than those who have less going on. I think this is because they can set up a schedule and not leave it till the last minute.
