Blog post #5 – Volunteering at the Peoples Pantry food recovery society

n my last blog post i explained how I was going to work on the other side of things, because in the past I had just done the sorting of donated foods, but this next time I was supposed to help put together the hampers with the sorted food and hand them out to families who are faced with food insecurity. Sadly I was unable to do so because I was sick , and this past weekend I was also not able to help with the hampers because that is typically later in the afternoon rather than the food sorting which is in the morning. So this past Sunday I decided to still do food sorting because I was free in the morning. It looked pretty much the same as the last time that I volunteered to do sorting at the peoples pantry food recovery society. We got donations from different charities and organizations throughout the day and had to sort through all of it to make sure people had a certain quality of food.

Some successes that I had this past volunteer shift was the fact that I was able to work much more efficiently and faster without needing that much direction from other people. Since it was my second time doing it I knew more or less what I was doing. This kind of shows how even if trying new things is scary it gets easier and easier the more you do it. So I am even more excited for the next time I volunteer because I will be able to apply everything that I have learned the past two volunteering shifts and work even better next time.

A difficulty that I faced this time around was the fact that I was sick when I was supposed to volunteer. There was no way for me to really overcome this challenge as I did not want to go and infect all of the other volunteers. Especially because we are working around food and distributing it to families in need. If this challenge arises again i will probably still not go because of the nature of the work that we are doing , handing out food to vulnerable people in our community which i think is a good call. I will simply go the following week and try to give as much of my time as i can.

Next time I would really love to volunteer on the other side of things like I had been planing to do so before, building the food hampers and actually distribute them to the families. I think that being able to connect with those that I am serving would be a great experience where I would be able to really listen , and learn a lot. I plan to continue with this action for a while because i am really enjoying the experience as well as the people i get to volunteer with. I am really glad that i was able to find this opportunity and share it with all of you for my action project.
