Blog Post #7: How does social media affect the development of teenagers – Final Reflection

Throughout this inquiry project, I faced several challenges while researching how social media affects teenagers. One challenge was finding reliable information that was actually focused on teens and not just social media in general. There are thousands of articles online, but many of them are opinion-based or not supported by research. To overcome this, I focused on using trusted organizations like the Mayo Clinic, the Pew Research Center, and the World Health Organization. These sources provided statistics and research that helped support my points. Another challenge was figuring out how I wanted to organize my post by talking about both positive and negative effects of social media. To solve this issue, I planned out each post by finding positive and negative information to help show the reader that social media doesn’t always have to be bad and that it helps many people. By doing this, it really helped me clearly explain how social media affects communication and relationships, mental health, identity, and self-expression.

This inquiry project also changed the way I think about social media. Before doing this research, I mostly saw social media as something people use for entertainment, scrolling through videos, or talking to friends. However, I learned that it can have much deeper effects on teenagers development. One example is the way social media can affect mental health through comparison. Many teens constantly see edited photos, influencers, and “perfect” lifestyles online, which can make them feel like their own lives are not good enough. This comparison can lower self-esteem and increase anxiety. A second example is how social media affects communication and relationships. While it can help teens connect with people around the world and find communities that share the same interests, it can also create misunderstandings and unhealthy relationships. For example, online friendships can sometimes lead to situations like catfishing or manipulation, where someone pretends to be someone else to gain their trust. A third example is how social media influences identity and self-expression. Teenagers often shape what they post based on how many likes or comments they might receive. Because of this, they may hide parts of their real personality and only show the “best” version of themselves online. Learning about all this made me realize that social media has both positive and negative impacts, and it depends a lot on how it is used.

This investigation will impact my future decisions when it comes to using social media. One way it will affect me is that I will be more aware of how much time I spend on social media and how it affects my mood. If I notice that scrolling is making me compare myself to others or feel worse about myself, I will try to limit my time online. Another thing I will do when on social media is to be more careful about who I trust and talk to online. Learning about risks like catfishing made me realize that not everyone online is honest about who they are. Because of this, it is important to protect personal information and pay attention to the warning signs in online relationships.

Finally, this investigation could have an impact on others locally and globally. Social media is used by millions of teenagers around the world, which means its effects are everywhere. In my local community, I can share the information I learned to help other students around me become more aware of how social media affects their mental health, relationships, and self-image. If all teens could understand these effects, they might start using social media in healthier ways, such as spending less time comparing themselves to others or being more careful with online friendships. On the global level, understanding the positive and negative impacts of social media could encourage better digital habits and safer online spaces for young people everywhere. Overall, this project helped me understand that social media is a powerful influence in teenagers lives, and learning how to use it responsibly is extremely important.
