Blog #7: Reflection: How does fast fashion impact the environment, and what can we do about it?

Throughout this inquiry project, I faced several challenges. One of the biggest difficulties was finding reliable and accurate sources that clearly explained both the environmental and human impacts of fast fashion. There is a lot of information online, but not all of it is trustworthy or detailed enough, and some sources oversimplify the issue. To overcome this, I focused on using reputable sources such as research articles, educational websites, and reports from well-known organizations. I also compared information across multiple sources to make sure it was consistent and accurate.

Another challenge was understanding complex ideas like global supply chains, pollution processes, and economic impacts. At first, some of the information felt overwhelming because it connected so many different issues together, including climate change, labor rights, and consumer behavior. I worked through this by breaking the information into smaller parts, taking notes, and rewriting everything in my own words. This helped me not only understand the topic better but also explain it more clearly in my blog posts.

This inquiry changed the way I think about fashion and everyday choices. Before this project, I mostly saw clothing as something simple, affordable, and easy to replace. I did not really think about where my clothes came from or what happened to them after I stopped wearing them. Now, I understand that every item of clothing has a much bigger impact, from the resources used to make it to the people involved in production and the waste it creates. I have become more aware of how fast trends encourage overconsumption and how this contributes to environmental damage.

This investigation will impact my future decisions by making me more mindful when I shop. I plan to buy fewer items and focus on choosing higher-quality clothing that will last longer. I am also more likely to shop at thrift stores or look for second-hand options, since this reduces waste and extends the life of clothing. In addition, I want to take better care of the clothes I already own by repairing them instead of throwing them away. Overall, I will try to be more intentional with my purchases instead of buying things just because they are cheap or trendy.

The impact of this investigation can extend beyond just myself. Locally, sharing this information can encourage others in my community to think more carefully about their clothing choices. Actions like donating clothes, organizing clothing swaps, and supporting local thrift stores can help reduce waste and promote sustainability. Even small changes can make a difference when many people take part. Globally, raising awareness about fast fashion can contribute to larger changes. It can push companies to improve working conditions, reduce pollution, and use more environmentally friendly materials.

Overall, this inquiry has helped me realize that fast fashion is not just a personal choice but part of a much larger global system. It has shown me that even small individual actions, when combined with others, can contribute to meaningful change.
