blog post #2 – Time line of conflict in the middle east, planing for future posts

Hi! Welcome back to my blog about the conflict in the middle east. Often when events are happing in the middle east I am confused, and don’t get where the issue really started, or how its gotten to this point. So, to educate myself, and others reading, I decided to make a time line of all major conflict in the middle east. This way all the information will be in one place so when I write my conclusion I can easily see why and how the things that are happening now came to be. I will do this by looking at the pattern of conflict in the past. When making the time line I will try to be as non-biased as possible and state the facts with out involving my personal opionion. There is alot of conflict to go over so I tried to divide it into reasonable sections.

1st Round of Reasearch – Ancient times until ~19/20th century

  • 499 BCE–449 BCE: Greco-Persian Wars between Greek city-states and the Persian Empire
  • 335–323 BCE: Wars of Alexander the Great expand Macedonian control across Persia, Syria, and Egypt.
  • 66 BCE–217 CE: Roman-Parthian conflicts in Anatolia, Syria, and Mesopotamia, resulting in prolonged stalemates
  • 7th–8th centuries: Arab-Khazar Wars and Byzantine-Arab Wars
  • Crusades:
    • Others main events
    • How the events listed above set up the middle east in the world wars

2nd Round of Reasearch – ~20th century

  • 1914–1918: World War I, Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule
  • 1919–1923: Turkish War of Independence, Iraqi-Kurdish conflicts
  • 1920s–1930s: Revolts in Palestine, Syria, and Iraq, the Great Syrian Revolt, Sheikh Said rebellion
  • 1939 – 1945: World War II
  • 1948–1949: Arab/Israeli, Israel’s declaration of independence
  • 1956: Suez Crisis,
  • 1967: Six-Day War,
  • 1975–1990: Lebanese Civil War
  • 1979: Iranian Revolution
  • 1980–1988: Iran-Iraq War
  • 1990–1991: Gulf War
  • 1987–1993: First Intifada, Palestinian uprising
    • Others main events
    • Cold war

3rd round of reasearch – recent and curent events

  • 2003–2011: Iraq War, U.S.-led invasion
  • 2011–2024: Syrian Civil War
  • 2014–present: Yemeni Civil War, Saudi-led intervention, proxy war with Iran.
  • 2023–present: Israel-Hamas war, Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Iran-Israel tensions,
    • Other main events
    • Trump’s Adminstration
    • What this means for the future

To my current knowledge these are the main reasons for conflict : territorial disputes, foreign interventions, terroisist groups conflicting with sate actors (Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS), religion, proxy wars. I will be paying special attention do these things because I think it will allow me to answer my question:

Why is there conflict in the middle east and how did it get that way?

The answer to this question will have implications for both for my communit as well as myself. For so long I’ve wanted to understand whats going on and have been frustrated by not knowing why all this violence is happening across the globe. This project will definitely change the way I see and understand current events. It will also affect whoever will read and learn from my blog by deeping their understanding of these conflicts and the sentiments behing them. I think it is everyones responsibility to educate themselves about global conflicts, and their causes so that we better understand the world around us and our role in it.
