Social media has been rapidly advancing and has become a part of our daily lives, especially for ages 10 and up. Social media has been very helpful to students, as it provides digital communication, access to learning resources, and platforms to express creativity. However, while it has many benefits, it also comes with challenges such as distractions, time management issues, and procrastination. This leads to my inquiry question: “How does social media negatively affect students’ work habits and their academic performances?” In this blog, I will be breaking this question into three research steps in order to come to a thorough conclusion.

The first question that I will be researching is: What features of social media harm students? This question will help me discover how social media can distract students while keeping them engaged with their devices all day. I will be finding all the techniques and strategies social media uses to capture the attention of a student, and I will analyze how and why those distractions are affecting a student’s ability to learn. Also, this step will help me get closer to answering my question, “How does social media negatively affect students’ work habits and their academic performances?” This is because understanding these key features will show me exactly how social media can lead to a variety of distractions that affect students’ abilities to focus, manage time, and complete schoolwork effectively.

The second question that I will be researching is: How does the use of social media affect students’ work habits? This question will help me understand how online platforms can distract one from being able to productively manage their time for work. In this step, I will look at how social media leads to procrastination for tasks, poor time management, and lack of focus. Moreover, this step will help me get closer to answering my question, “How does social media negatively affect students’ work habits and their academic performances?” This is because work habits are key to a productive daily routine; however, as these platforms gain our focus, it can result in having an unproductive daily routine since one is so hyper-focused on their device that they are just wasting time, making it harder to understand a topic of struggle or finish any assigned work properly.

My last research step question is: How do the distractions and bad work habits influenced by social media impact students’ academic performances? This question will help me understand how the many effects of these digital platforms could impact a student’s overall academic success and achievements. In this step, I will analyze how distractions and bad work habits like procrastination can lead to incomplete assignments, lower test scores, and a weaker understanding of course material. Furthermore, this step will help me get closer to answering my question, “How does social media negatively affect students’ work habits and their academic performances?” This is because it will show how students’ habits, influenced by social media, can lead to negative academic outcomes over time as the individual keeps getting drawn and glued to their devices more and more.

My main question has important implications for both myself and my community, as social media has played a big role in our daily lives, especially for students. Personally, learning about the negative impacts of social media and how they can influence negative academic outcomes and work habits will help me reduce the temptation of going on my device for a “short” break, as I will realize how hurtful and damaging that device can be to me. This will lead me to become more aware and make better choices when managing my time to complete schoolwork. This is important to me because I currently struggle to stay focused due to distractions from my phone. For my community, it can raise awareness on how media can destroy your intelligence, encouraging individuals to try and set time limits to decrease their use of media. Leading to developing better study habits, effective time management, and academic success. This can also create a more productive and focused learning environment for everyone.
