Blog Post #2

Hi, this is my second post, enjoy!

1.)  Provide a summary of the action you are planning and how are you going to start.

For my action project, I am planning to help in a senior care center. My goal is to improve their emotional well-being by spending time with them, listening to their stories, and assisting with simple activities like reading, playing games, or helping during group events. To start, I have sent volunteer forms for some senior living places around my area. Then, I will complete any required forms and orientation required starting with a small commitment, like once a week.

2.) One lesson in the talk is that ‘Everything is complicated’. Please reflect on this and provide some examples to support your reflection. Can you explain some of the complexity that you will face in your action?

“Everything is complicated” applies strongly to this action project. At first, volunteering might seem easy (spending time with seniors), but in reality, there are many things that can make it complicated (seniors might have different emotional needs, communication might be different, building trust takes time). In my action I may have some challenges such as:
-Not knowing how to respond in emotional situations
-Feeling unsure about how to communicate effectively
-Balancing my time between school and volunteering

3.) Is this action sustainable? Provide some specific examples to support your reasoning.

This action is sustainable because it is a long-term commitment. Supporting elderly people is not a one-time issue. Many of these people experience loneliness and isolation regularly, which means there is a constant need for volunteering. Elderly people sometimes need someone to talk with someone they feel comfortable with. Because of this, I think my action could be long term and I am consistent with helping.

4.) Is this action providing opportunity? How will you ensure you are making the positive impact that you intend?

This action provides opportunities for both seniors and me. For seniors, they will have less loneliness, a better mood, and opportunities to talk and share their past experiences. For me, I will have the opportunity to develop better communication, empathy skills, gain a better understanding of different life experiences, and learn responsibility and commitment. To ensure that I make a positive impact, I will:
-Listing carefully to the needs of each elderly person
-Be respectful, responsible, and emphatic
-Ask staff for guidance in how to do certain activites
-Relfect on my interactions with elderly and improve over time
By focusing on creating a connection with elderly people, I can ensure that I can make a meaningful and positive impact.

That’s all my post, thank you 🙂
