Blog Post #1: Inquiry Project – Grief and Identity After the Loss of a Parent

Hi everyone, and welcome back to my blog! I am excited to start my second and last inquiry of the year. My previous inquiry question was: “How does receiving a cancer diagnosis affect the psychological, emotional, physical, and mental well-being of patients and their families, and what strategies help them cope with these challenges?”

My new question: How does grief change a person’s sense of identity after the loss of a parent?

Why I Chose This Inquiry Question?

I chose this inquiry question because it connects directly to my own life experiences and raises important psychological and emotional questions that many people face. I recently lost my dad to cancer this past January, and since then I have noticed that grief affects more than just emotions, it can also change how a person sees themselves, their responsibilities, and their place in the world.

The loss of a parent can cause people to take on new roles, mature faster, or feel disconnected from the version of themselves they once knew. This topic interests me because identity is something that continues to develop throughout life, and grief may play a significant role in shaping that development. I want to explore how grief influences identity over time and how people come to understand themselves differently after experiencing such a profound loss.

This inquiry is important to me because it encourages deep thinking, reflection, and research rather than simple answers. It also allows for multiple perspectives, since everyone experiences grief differently depending on age, culture, personality, and family dynamics.

I am excited to break down on research soon, and hopefully find some answers for deep thinking and to find some answers for myself.
