Blog Post #4 – How does our society define admirable attributes in one’s nature and do authentic people receive the recognition they deserve?

Inquiry Question: Where has true originality and individuality gone; is our society slowly losing authenticity with the constant urge to follow trends?

Research Step 2: How does our society define admirable attributes in one’s nature and do authentic people receive the recognition they deserve?

In modern day society, admirable attributes in one’s nature is not a topic commonly talked about. The vast majority of people would say that obtaining characteristics such as respect, honesty, and empathy are most admirable. However, authenticity is commonly brushed aside. The direct definition of authenticity is the quality of being authentic. Or in simpler terms, the quality of being true to oneself. Sometimes its difficult to understand whether someone is emulating others’ ideas or actually being truly authentic. (1) Due to the everchanging state of social media and various online platforms, its almost like some posts counteract others; relaying polar opposite messages and ideologies. (1) As the popularity of social media platforms continue to soar, how can we diminish the influencing affect it plays, altering our subconscious mind? It’s a loaded question worth addressing, especially in times like these where admirable attributes seemingly has taken a rebrand.

The bottom line of associating people with having admirable qualities comes down to how one views themself. People often see admirable attributes in others because they seek to develop similar qualities. (2) It’s easy to view someone who is respectful or kind, but may be increasingly difficult to find someone who is authentic for who they are. The majority of individuals in modern day society state that someone is admirable based on specific actions or qualities that set them apart from the rest of the population. (2) Admiring attributes of others’ reveals what traits you aspire to have. (3)

For example, take Rocky Balboa. He displays a variety of admirable attributes such as determination, resilience, humility, and courage. Rocky Balboa is a fan favourite from the Rocky film franchise, showcased as an iconic boxer. Why do you think so many people idolize him? It must go beyond the means of just him being a boxer. People admire Rocky Balboa for his grit, so does that mean there’s a fire waiting to be unleashed in you? (3) There’s more to admiration than most people suspect. Next time you find yourself in a state of admiration, ask yourself, “why do I feel this way?”

Authenticity is a trait so many aspire to have yet so few possess. Societal norms may take a toll on one’s sense of originality; hindering their ability to stay true and honest with themself. (4) When two people are having a discussion, it is common to face disagreements. Although, a select few may go against their intuition and simply agree with another’s opinion even if they truly oppose it. (5) Next time you encounter a conversation where two people are in disagreement about whatever the topic may be, just remember that both parties are staying true to themself and their beliefs, displaying authenticity.

All in all, authenticity is an extremely admirable attribute. Being authentic showcases one’s sense of integrity, trust, and mental well-being. (5) It is vital to surround yourself with others who are authentic to foster a strong relationship; having a tight-knit bond. It is a beautiful thing to see when people value authenticity and radiate the attribute; stimulating a healthier environment.

The secret is authenticity. The reason people fail is because they’re pretending to be something they’re not. – Oprah Winfrey
