Throughout this inquiry project, I have explored the question: If our imaginations are formed by what we have seen and experienced, can anyone truly create something original, and if so, who or what defines originality?

After researching how ideas are formed and why many ideas succeed or fail, I have come to understand that originality is more complicated than it first seems. Our imaginations are built from everything we see, hear, and experience, which means even new ideas are often influenced by existing ones. Because of this, true originality is very hard to achieve. Most “new” ideas are actually combinations or improvements of things that already exist.I also learned that not all ideas succeed, even if they are creative or useful. Many fail because of limited funding, lack of support, or because they are not seen as profitable. Others fail during testing because they do not work well or are not safe. This shows that it is not only creativity that shapes ideas, but also outside factors like money, approval, and practicality.

So, who defines originality?

Originality isn’t defined by one single person or group. Originality is something completely new and original but imagination and creativity are certainly shaped by different groups of people. In today’s world, some of these people are, people with power like influencers, media platforms, and rich people like Elon musk because they help decide what ideas are seen and shared.

Some Studies

For example, research shows that social media trends can strongly affect how people think. It also shows that influencers can shape opinions and choices because many people follow and trust them.(1) Other, research explains that the ideas that succeed are often shaped by money, technology, and global trends, meaning ideas are more likely to succeed if they match what investors and companies support.(2) Finally, research from shows that in medicine, funding and support play a role in which treatments are developed and tested, which affects which ideas reach the public and how the scientist think.(3)

In conclusion, originality has a definition but creativity can be shaped by society, technology, and people with influence and or money. Our imaginations are personal, but they are also shaped by the world around us. True originality may be very rare, but creativity is still important because it helps us build new ideas from old ones.
