For this round of research, I wanted to focus on how the Flow state can be applied in daily life. As I see it used daily by athletes, teachers, parents etc, I want to apply it in real life. Research shows that habits and routines can make it easier for people to focus deeply and stay engaged in tasks. Small changes in daily routines can improve concentration and productivity. This could be like making your bed in the morning, doing it enough makes it a habit and eventually something you do everyday. (1)

One major obstacle to Flow is distraction. Especially in our generation, with Phones and notifications interrupting attention and making deep focus harder to achieve. Research suggests that removing distractions and working in quiet environments can improve concentration. People like LeBron turn off all notifications until the playoffs are over; you have to be dedicated. These habits help the brain stay focused long enough to enter Flow. (2)

Another strategy connected to Flow is time blocking. This means setting aside specific periods of time to focus on only one task. This could be like planning out your day on Sunday for the rest of the week. Research from Harvard Business Review suggests that people work better when they focus on one task instead of multitasking. Making “locking in” way easier. (3)

Research from Stanford University also shows that routines and practice improve focus. When people repeat skills regularly, the brain becomes more automatic and efficient. This helps people focus more on performance and less on basic actions. Athletes often use routines to prepare themselves mentally before performing. As I have researched on this before, not one successful person has made it out of the trenches without conquering their mental state of mind. (4)

Sleep, exercise, and mental health also affect the ability to enter Flow. Studies show that people focus better when they are rested and physically healthy. Exercise improves attention, while lack of sleep reduces concentration. This often leads to fatigue making performance less proficient. This means healthy habits can improve the chances of reaching Flow. (5)
