Blog Post #5 – Action project (Picking up garbage from local parks)

After doing our research and collecting the proper supplies needed for our project, we met at Lafarge lake to pick up garbage. To our surprise, we noticed way less garbage than we expected. Many places were already clean; however, in more populated areas, garbage was present. We wore gloves and stayed aware of any dangerous and harmful items that may come across us. For example, when collecting garbage, we came across masks, gloves, wires, bandages, and other biohazardous materials. We made sure to stay away from these items since they can carry a lot of bacteria and viruses. Some successes we have had was being able to attend all together. In our last project, we were limited to when and where we can complete our project. However, this project was much more flexible. We were able to coordinate a time and place and leave space for any last minute changes. We have not yet faced any challenges.

Some challenges we may encounter next time we collect garbage can be injuring ourselves. Although we try to stay cautious, mistakes can happen. We may accidently step on broken glass or encounter drugs. We will overcome this challenge by getting help right away and watching our step every time. Our next step is doing some reflection on how we can improve our community and planet. We will continue to encourage others to pick up after themselves to help save our planet. A quote we can use is “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” by Robert Swan. This quote will help us remind others of the importance of keeping our earth healthy.
