Blog Post #7 – How does stress affect student learning and performance?


The question I chose to try and answer this semester with my inquiry project was “How does stress affect student learning and performance?”

What challenges did you overcome throughout this inquiry project? How did you go about overcoming these challenges?

A major challenge I faced during this project was that lots of sources provided very similar information. It was difficult finding all the symptoms for example, I had to search for many credible sources to be able to address everything I had originally planned. There were moments during the project when I didn’t have quite as much time as I had originally thought to research for and write my posts, so I sacrificed quite a few off blocks to make sure I was happy with my posts.

How did this inquiry change the way I think?

The biggest way this inquiry project changed the way I think was how I perceive stress. After doing all my research and reaching my final verdict, I have realized that stress is not something that is always harmful, and that it can even be beneficial. This project gave me the opportunity to discover new ways to manage stress and better recognize the signs when something isn’t right.

How did this investigation impact your future decisions?

Like I mentioned previously, this project has taught me new strategies I can use to manage my stress levels. I now find myself using these methods when I find myself in a stressful situation, and I have also helped friends and family manage their stress as well. In the future I will continue to put these strategies to use and keep myself in the right mindset.

What impact will this investigation have on others locally and/or globally?

My question was centred around stress for students, so I have started sharing strategies and ideas with my peers and friends. I’m glad to have this platform to post on in case there is a student somewhere out there who needs some extra support, I hope they can see my posts and get some quick ideas to help them in the moment.

Overall, this project allowed me to further educate myself about ways to better my daily mental health and help others around me who may want some extra support. My goal for this project was to find strategies to manage stress for students and find out possible risks with excessive stress. I enjoyed this project a lot and I’m excited to end this year off on a great note!
