Blog post #1- Why do people sometimes become more interested in something when they are told they cannot have it?

My inquiry question for this semester will be:

Why do people sometimes become more interested in something when they are told they cannot have it?

Why this question is interesting for me:

I chose this question because I find psychology and human behaviour really interesting and something I want to keep exploring in. Recently, I have been learning about scarcity and human behaviour when it comes to marketing, to which I have noticed that when people are told they cannot have something, they end up wanting it even more than they did before. For example, when a store advertises a product as limited edition or says that only a few items are left, people may feel more interested in buying it because they think they might miss out. Another example is when parents tell their children they cannot have something, which can sometimes make the children want it even more. I want to understand why this happens and what causes people to react this way. I am interested in exploring things like curiosity, and the idea that something is harder to get can affect our decisions and desires. I also wonder if this reaction happens to everyone or if it depends on the person and the situation. I think this topic will be interesting to research because there could be many different explanations, and I hope to develop a better understanding of why people behave this way.

Thank you for reading!
