To examine my question, “How does smartphone use influence attention span and memory in adolescents?” I will sort my research into three stages:
- Find daily smartphone usage patterns of adolescents
- Explore the impact of smartphone use on attention span
- Examine the effects of smartphone use on memory

Finding Daily Patterns:
For the first round of research, I will examine how often adolescents use smartphones daily. This means, average screen times, most commonly used apps such as social media, gaming, messaging and academic tools. Finally, the reason adolescents spend time on their devices. Understanding these usage patterns provides context for future research. But before diving into the effects, I’ll need to find how frequently adolescents are using them and what they’re engaging in.
Explore The Impact on Attention Span:

For the second round of research, I will focus on the relationship between smartphone use and attention span. I’ll examine studies based on how frequently teens spend time on their devices can affect how long they can focus on tasks, concentrate in class, finish homework, and resist distractions. I will also look at how notifications and multitasking might influence cognitive control. This is one of the important steps of research since attention span is a key factor is learning and academic success. Understanding how phone usage affects concentration can show whether smartphone habits contribute to focus loss.

Examine The Effects on Memory:
In my final round of research, I will investigate how phone usage influences memory in adolescents. I’ll explore studies that examine short-term memory, working memory, information recall and learning performance. This step is essential because memory is closely connected to academic achievement and everyday functioning. By analyzing evidence, I will be able to determine whether smartphone use has a positive, negative or mixed effect on adolescent’s ability to remember information. With all this research, it will help me fully answer my overall question.

This question is important to me because smartphones are a major part of my daily life. By understanding how smartphone use affects attention span and memory, I can make better decisions about screen time, studying and maintaining healthy habits. the findings might also help me improve my focus and academic performance. This research is also important for my community because many adolescents use smartphones extensively for communication, entertainment and education. If excessive smartphone use negatively affects attention and memory, parents, teachers and students can develop healthier technology habits and create strategies to reduce distractions. The research could contribute to improving learning outcomes, mental well-being and overall academic success.
