Blog #2 Post: Why do people care about what others think of them?

In this post, I will be continuing my discovery and research about why humans care about what other people think of them. I will be finding three steps for research and provide sources i can use to answer my questions.

My three steps of research:

  1. Ancestral psychology research
  2. Brain responses
  3. Psychology models & theories

1: Ancestral psychology research will tell me where the care for approval and other possible reasons originated in humans back before modern civilization. I could also do research on philosophers to see if I could possibly gather information about the way that human minds works and other factors that could help my research. This will help me get a basic understanding of ancient human psychology, society, and civilization, as well as how that comes into play for my research and answering this question.

2: I can study the brain’s reactions to social feedback, and where it happens. This will help me understand the neurological process behind caring about people’s opinions. Learning about these responses can help me understand why criticism, embarrasment, or exclusion can feel upsetting and why people naturally seek acceptance from others.

3: Psychology models and theories will give me a bigger image on human psychology overall, and why humans try to influence how others see them. People often try to fit in, gain approval, and avoid being judged by others. These desires influence how we act, make decisions, and present ourselves. Exploring these concepts will help me develop a better understanding of why social acceptance is important to people and how other people’s opinions affect confidence, self-esteem, and personal identity.

Answering this question can help in many different way. It can help lots of people be less self conscious and insecure, it can help you be a better friend by teaching you the thinking behind caring about what others think, and help you understand their emotions and feelings. It can also help my community by encouraging people to be more understanding of one another, reducing judgment and peer pressure, and creating a more accepting environment where people feel comfortable being themselves.
