Blog #2 -Project Plan: Child development

How do daily things like sports, technology and environment/school affect child development?

My steps of research:

  1. The impact from sports and extra curriculars
  2. Understanding how technology influences growth
  3. Why does the environment change the child’s devolvement?

The impact from sports and extra curriculars

The first step for my inquiry, I will research on how sports/extra curriculars affect the child’s development. Most children start a sport at a young age, whether it is team or individual activity, there are effects on their physical and mental health. Depending on the activity a child does, what are positive and negative impacts on their growth. For some others, they start later in a sport, how does that change their development? With sports, fun and stress comes along the way. I would like to explore how it can make habits, build mindsets and help them in the future. I know when it comes to sports mindset always matters and just actively engaging will always make it more fun. I would like to look into how not just the sports itself but how teammates and coaches help when it comes to sports.

Understanding how technology influences growth

My next step in this project will dive into how technology changes the child. In this generation, technology is used much more and has evolved. Lots of children have access to technology, whether they have a phone or a tv. What they see and watch adapts to how they act and think. I will investigate depending on the ages why technology affects daily life more than it did before, how much screentime a child should have a day and setting limits. I will learn about how social media affects and influences. Apps like TikTok, Instagram, etc. are negative and positive in their life. Personally, I think that social media has influenced me who I am a lot. I know I spend a lot of time on these platforms which affects my time management, sleep schedule and much more. In my opinion, it is more negative on my life. I found that my screentime can get really bad and how unproductive it is to doomscroll, spending countless hours on one app.

Why and how does the environment change the child’s devolvement?

For my last research, I will study the why school and environment is so important to a child’ development. A crucial part in a child’s progress is the environment they are in. In school or at home, this affects how a child ability to socialize and adapt. How can a child in an environment that is negative differentiate to one that is in a positive surrounding? I will research the needs for a safe environment for a child. Another aspect I would like to touch is the differences of homeschooled kids and kids who attend school. School should always be a safe place for young children to teenagers. Besides learning, it is a place to meet new people and find different cultures. For me school is can be stressful, but I love being able to see my friends and hanging out with them.

This question will have implications on my knowledge of child development. For the future, this may be one of my options as a study and a field of work. I like working with children, so hopefully when I am volunteering or working, I am able to apply some things I learn from this inquiry project. In my daily life, I am usually around children, these new informations I learn can help me in situations. Understanding their growth may help my community when I am volunteering at my skating club. I hope this project can become the start of a foundation for my understanding on a child’s development for future use!
