Blog Post #2 – Project Plan: How Did Cornell University’s Response to the Cornell 7 Incident Raise Questions About Accountability and Student Safety?

For my inquiry project, I have decided to research how Cornell University’s response to the Cornell 7 incident raised questions about accountability and student safety. To answer my question, I am going to divide my research into three main steps. Each step will help me understand a different part of the case and how the university’s response connects to the bigger issue of student safety.

First, I want to research the background of the Cornell 7 incident. I want to learn about the events surrounding the case, what was reported, and how the situation first came to the attention of the university. I will look at reliable news articles, official statements, and available documents to understand the timeline of events. I also want to compare different sources to see what information has been confirmed and what is still being disputed. This first step is important because I need to understand the case itself before I can properly examine the university’s response. Without knowing the background, it would be difficult to understand why the case raised questions about accountability and student safety. This research will be the focus of Blog Post #3.

Second, I want to research how Cornell University handled the situation. Some questions I want to look into are, what steps did the university take after the allegations were reported? How did its investigation work? What disciplinary actions were taken, and what concerns have been raised about the university’s response? I also want to understand the difference between a university investigation and a criminal investigation because they follow different processes. Looking into Cornell’s actions and comparing the university’s statements with independent news reporting will help me understand why its response became an important part of the case. This is probably the most important step in answering my inquiry question because it focuses directly on the university’s responsibility and accountability. I will use this research for Blog Post #4.

Third, I want to research what universities can do to improve student safety and accountability. I want to explore what policies universities have to prevent sexual misconduct, how students can report incidents, and what support is available to people who come forward. Some questions I could research are, how can universities make students feel safer? What makes an investigation fair and effective? What changes could help universities respond better to serious allegations in the future? I think this step is important because I do not want to only learn about one case. I also want to understand what lessons can be learned from it and how other universities could use those lessons to improve their own policies. This will help me connect my research to the bigger issue of campus safety and will be the focus of Blog Post #5.

How This Inquiry Will Affect Me and My Community

Researching this topic will help me understand more about how serious situations are investigated and why it is important to look at reliable information before forming an opinion. I want to improve my ability to research complicated topics, compare different points of view, and separate facts from allegations. I think these skills will be useful in school and in my future, especially because I want to study business and eventually own my own company. Business owners need to make responsible decisions, understand different perspectives, and take accountability for their actions.

This topic also connects to my community because student safety is important in schools, universities, and other places where people spend time together. Even though Cornell University is in the United States, the questions raised by this case can also encourage students in Canada to think about how schools respond to serious incidents. It is important for students to understand where they can find support, how concerns should be reported, and why fair investigations matter. Overall, I hope this inquiry helps me better understand the responsibilities universities have toward their students and what can be done to create safer environments for everyone.
