Blog Post #2 – Project Plan

Something that I have always been interested in the way is other people’s body language and how they might react to their surroundings and other people. As per my question – “How well can we understand what someone is feeling and thinking through their body language?”, I am going to be going deeper into this topic with three steps:

1. How can non-verbal cues reveal communicate intentions and emotions without words?

This topic will explore how people can show their thoughts and feelings using facial expressions, hand gestures, posture and eye contact, and how these can all provide clues about someone’s internal self. This is important because people often communicate without using words, and looking at the clues their body gives, we can learn to recognize these signals, which help us better understand the messages we aren’t receiving through body language. Most of the time, these signs don’t always give a single meaning, and the same expression can mean something else to different people. However, there are some things that you can gather from body language that are pretty accurate, broad things, like facial expressions can show happiness or confusion, or posture can show confidence or nervousness. This secondary question will help me further understand someone in one particular moment by only observing they way they conduct themselves.

2. How does someone’s surroundings and their relationships with others affect their body language?

This topic in Blog Post #4 will go into how someone’s body language might change depending on the people they interact with or their surroundings. People will behave differently depending on who they are with and what situation they are in, which is an interesting thing to analyze, because these factors definitely change how they present themselves. Understanding the context can allow us to look beyond individual gestures and think about the varying circumstances that could explain them. For example, authority figures or large audiences cause some people to shrink down, and unfamiliar environments can make people more wary and uncomfortable. You could think someone is defensive or being rude by crossing their arms, but in reality, the place you are in is cold. This secondary question helps to understand these influences because it will give me a chance to consider the context around a person, without making an assumption based on one look.

3. How can we misinterpret someone’s body language, and what is the art of lying?

Sometimes, we cannot accurately determine what someone is thinking or feeling, even with nonverbal cues, or any type of context. A person may hide their feelings to have their body language intentionally misunderstood. These misinterpretations show how easily we can confuse ourselves with deception or truth, especially when dealing with another person. Some people are unpredictable which can lead to honest misinterpretation, while others are just good at controlling their facial expressions so no one detects their dishonesty. Lying means to have untrue statements, and when someone does lie, they usually get nervous. Good liars don’t change the way they act, but rather keep everything they do and project to others the same as usual, and simply say their untrue statements. This secondary question will lead me to my main question, because it will question whether we can truly rely on the basic examination of someone and address the limitations of only observation.

This inquiry question will help me become more aware of the body language of others and it will make me a more competent analyzer of their thoughts and emotions. This will not change the way I view people, especially those I am close with, but it will give me a deeper understanding of why they feel a certain way. It will teach me to not make assumptions based on the way people present themselves, but also what is around them that is an influence. I can also improve my own communication skills, and be more aware of how others perceive my body language. These skills will help me build stronger relationships, become more observant and avoid misunderstandings. This might help the community by encouraging people to think about communicating more thoughtfully and understanding one another more effectively. I think this can help people know that someone else may act differently in situations and it can be advantageous to be more open-minded and not quick to assume, because that can cause unfair judgments or conflicts. Over the next few blog posts, I hope to help people recognize the importance of reading body language, but also looking beyond that to understand one another.
