About Me – Ariana Rehmat

My name is Ariana Rehmat and I am 15 years old in Grade 10. I attend Charles Best High School in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada.

I was introduced to the Butterfly Effect course when I was in Grade 8 during my tour in Charles Best. I was intrigued with the concept of doing my own Inquiry project as I have always been curious to learn and research. Last year, in Grade 9, I completed two inquiry projects both relating to Early Childhood Education and the study of the brain. I have always been completing side projects on my topics of interest in my own time and this class gave me the opportunity to give myself some structure and discipline to do passion projects. I am going into this year wanting to learn more and keep educating myself on topics that I can pursue a career in, in the future.

I have a lot of passions that guide me in my life. First, sports. I have been playing field hockey since I was in kindergarten and it is a big part of my life as it keeps me competitive and happy. Along with playing sports, I love watching sports as well. I could watch any sport, but mainly hockey, tennis and football. The teams I support are a big part of my personality and go on to prove my loyalty. I am a huge Vancouver Canucks ride-or-die fan that will support them whether they win or lose. I love being a sports fan and being able to be part of a community of believers.

Second, helping others. I love being able to help others whether something small, volunteering or going on to pursue a career where I can be helping others. Third, learning. I am a very curious person and I always enjoy learning something new or a completing a challenge. Last, my family and friends. I am passionate about the people in my life and I would support them no matter what.

If I could solve any global problem in the world it would be the mental health issues in the world. The amount of people suffering in this world alone with mental health difficulties is so difficult to digest. I want to go into a career with the human mind, because I would love to be able to help all the people that are struggling with mental problems. I know that it is impossible to be able to cure people of their mental health issues, which is another reason that I would want to solve this problem in the world. I always wish for world happiness and curing mental health problems is the first step to that.

I believe I play a role in my religious community in my position as a Junior Team Lead Volunteer. In my role, I guide the youth in my community with the volunteer roles by assigning tasks, helping their development and teaching them good values of our faith, Islam. I am a leader to the kids in my community whom I want to create personal connections with, but also to help them grow as individuals. I learnt so many ethics through my faith by watching volunteers in my community help others with no expectation of a reward, and they have inspired me to work hard for the position I have now and see it through. I want to inspire the next generation to learn these same values in our faith through the act of service and volunteering for others in our community.

I am most interested in the Inquiry category of the Butterfly Effect as I love learning new things in my topic of interests through research. After doing two Inquiry projects last year, I learnt so much more after fulling completing my project and being able to present it to others in my class. I really enjoyed researching my complex questions and I am looking forward to completing another Inquiry project this semester.
