My name is Rima Al-Sabbagh and I am 15 years old, living in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. I am in grade 11, studying at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School. My favorite subjects in school are Mathematics and Science. I enjoy Pre calculus, Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, and Physics. Outside of school, I love playing basketball, spending time with my friends and family, and listening to music. I enjoy taking walks and watching sunsets. I was born in Iraq and moved to Jordan when I was four years old. There I was exposed to a similar yet slightly different culture and adapted to a new lifestyle where I made new friends, participated in activities, and visited new places. Soon after, I moved to Canada, here I was very shy at first, didn’t know the language and missed home very much. However, after a few days, I adapted easily and found that the diversity, hospitality, and inclusivity welcomed me.
My passion lies in studying Biology at the University of British Columbia, in hopes of becoming a doctor. This is because I love helping others and making a positive impact in their lives, especially during their most vulnerable moments. The idea of using my knowledge and curiosity to heal, comfort, and save lives truly inspires me. My strongest traits are resilience and determination. When facing challenges, I always try to find a way out, inevitably bouncing back from setbacks and failures. I attempt to not let tough times stop me from moving forward.

If I could have a job right now it would be be working at a candy shop. I love all types of sweets and working at a store like this would make me feel very excited to attend work everyday. I would enjoy serving and packaging candies, creating creative displays and trying the different flavors. I consider one of my heroes to be my mother. She has shown me true strength and hard work. In Iraq she studied and worked as a dentist, however; coming to Canada she had to start over, take exams and go through certifications to meet Canadian standards. It was a difficult and challenging process, but she showed what patience, commitment, and adaptability is like, unflagging in her efforts to encourage me to face my challenges and chase my dreams.
Lastly, I am thrilled to see what IDS is like and the opportunities I get to experience. The category that I am most interested in is “Action”, where I get to volunteer and help out my community in a hands on exposure!
