Blog #2: Project plan

Welcome to my second blog post for my inquiry project this semester! As a refresher, my inquiry question is: “How does receiving a cancer diagnosis affect the psychological, emotional, physical, and mental well-being of patients and their families, and what strategies help them cope with these challenges?”

Throughout this post I will be sharing my steps for research and how they will address my overall question. As there are three research rounds (blog post #3, #4, and #5) I will tackle a different component per research round (ex: Blog post #3, mental/psychological), the impact receiving the diagnosis has on the patient/family, and what strategies can help them cope.

Step 1

For Blog post #3, I will research the mental and psychological impacts on both the patient and their family. I will research how a cancer diagnosis affects mental well-being, including stress, fear, anxiety, and changes in mindset for both the patient and family members. This step will help me understand the internal, cognitive struggles that appear right after diagnosis. I will also look into coping supports such as therapy, mental health services, and communication strategies to help families and patients handle these challenges.

Step 2

For Blog Post #4, I will research the emotional impacts on both the patient and their family. This round of research will dig deeper into the emotional toll of cancer such as sadness, grief, uncertainty, and emotional role changes in the family. Learning about these emotions will help me see how relationships and personal identity are affected. I will also include emotional coping strategies such as support groups, family connection, therapy and more.

Step 3

For Blog Post #5, I will research the physical impacts on both the patient and their family This step will explore how cancer affects the body and health, along with the physical strain family members might experience through caregiving, disrupted sleep, and stress. Understanding the physical changes will help complete the overall picture of well-being. I will also research physical coping strategies such as exercise, medical support, and more.

Cancer is not just a medical diagnosis. It affects daily life, relationships and so much more. This topic is personally meaningful to me because someone very close to me has been living with cancer for almost two years. I have seen the patient experience and the family experience up close. Whether that is fear, hope, exhaustion, or the constant strength it takes to keep going. This project gives me a chance to better understand what my loved one is facing, and how I can continue to support them in a way that truly helps. As well as find more supports for myself and family.

For my community, this research can open the door to conversations that are often avoided due to their heavy, uncomfortable feeling. Many families around us deal with cancer, sometimes quietly. Learning about the mental, emotional, and physical impacts, along with the strategies that provide relief and resilience, can help reduce stigma and build stronger support systems. By sharing what I learn, I hope to contribute to a community where patients and caregivers feel understood, supported, and less alone in their journey.

  1. I really enjoy the inquiry topic you have chose. I liked how you chose a topic that is not openly discussed as often rather than something that revolves around the media. A few things that stood out to me in your post, was the vocabulary and the format. By bolding your letters, it allowed me to get the main ideas out of each stanza because they stood out. I admire the way you used a personal connection to connect yourself to your story, it adds more depth and feeling in your text. Your post is very intriguing and interesting and I can’t wait to read you Blog Post #3, in the future I think that you could try making all your links look the same on your posts. If you don’t know how, I would be happy to help you!

  2. Hi Rhea!
I really enjoyed reading your blog post! I think your inquiry question is extremely meaningful and important as cancer impacts to only patients but also their families in many different ways. I liked the way you organized your research steps clearly, making it easy to understand what each post will focus on. The way you connected your topic to a personal experience was powerful and made your writing impactful. I also like that you plan to approach and explore each aspect (mental, physical, and emotional) seperatly, demonstrating strong structure in your research plan! In the future you could try and make your transitions smoother so it flows better, but overall it was a strong and meaningful post. I’m looking forward to reading your future blog posts! 3. Hello Rhea, I really liked reading your blog post. I like that you are looking at how cancer affects you mentally, emotionally and physically, not just the medical part. That shows that you really understand how cancer doesn’t just affect you physically but mentally and emotionally too. I also think that it’s meaningful that you are doing this because of someone close to you. That personal connection makes your project even stronger. Maybe for your next post you can include some quotes or stories from people who’ve gone through this, it might help others connect with you more. Thanks for sharing and I’m looking forward to reding your next posts.
