1.) Where are you with your action? (e.g. what involvement have you had so far? Describe with examples)
For my project, I visit a dog park near Chilko every Wednesday to assist with trash cleanup. The task is pretty straightforward, mainly picking up litter. So there’s not much more to elaborate on. Each session lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the amount of trash. For instance, today I focused on cleaning the left side of the park, as the right side had already been cleared.

Above is a half-filled water bottle I found laying on the grass.
2.) What are some successes that you have had? Provide specific examples.
One week, I actually managed to fill almost an entire garbage bag, which I later disposed of through Coquitlam’s weekly recycling and trash pickup system. It was a nice reminder that even small efforts add up. I also got the chance to hang out with a few dogs while I was working, which made the whole experience a lot more enjoyable. Moments like that make the project feel less like a task and more like something I genuinely look forward to each week.
3.) What are some challenges that you have faced? Have you been able to overcome them? If so, how? Provide specific examples. If not, can you problem-solve some ideas that might work for next time or if a similar situation arises? Again, provide specific examples.
The weather can be unpredictable, and it often feels like it rains exactly when I plan to go out, forcing me to either reschedule or wait for the rain to pass. While I can’t control the weather, I can plan ahead by checking the forecast for the week, though I know predictions aren’t always accurate. Another challenge I’ve encountered is dealing with certain types of trash, particularly dog litter, which I prefer not to handle directly. To make it easier, I’ve started bringing a shovel with me on each trip, just in case I need it. I’ve also noticed that other organizations use a similar approach when cleaning up dog parks, often relying on regular trash bags for collection. The main difference is that these groups typically have about fifteen adult volunteers managing the cleanup, which adds a level of coordination to the process.(1)

4.) What are you doing next and why?
I’ll probably keep going every week until the end of the semester, but even after that, I can see myself continuing. It’s become something I genuinely enjoy. It’s simple, relaxing, and gives me a chance to get outside for a bit. Plus, it feels good to know I’m helping keep the park clean for the community (and the dogs). So even once the project requirement is over, I think I’ll still make it part of my routine.

Hi Bernice, I loved how consistent you’ve been cleaning the dog park each week and how you adjust based on which areas need the most attention. I also really liked that you brought a shovel to make dealing with tougher trash easier. A helpful tip might be keeping a small kit like extra gloves or bags in your backpack so you’re ready for whatever you find each time.
Hi Bernice! I really enjoyed reading about how you are doing a genuine job at your action, your dedication to continue even after the semester is over, your ability to have organized thoughts, and your personal moments with dogs. It made me feel connected to your post. A suggestion I have is to bring protection like gloves and sanitizers, and to elaborate on why you are doing your action to strengthen your ideas; like how it can affect your community or impact the environment. Here is a site that might help you: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/picking-litter-pointless-exercise-or-powerful-tool-battle-beat-plastic. Overall, you did a great job writing and carrying out your action, and I loved what you shared!
Hi Bernice! This is such a meaningful project! I love how you’ve been consistent with your weekly cleanups, and it’s great that you’ve already made such impact by filling almost a whole garbage bag!
have you thought about putting up a small sign to encourage other dog owners to help keep the park clean too?A simple reminder could make your work even more effective.
Great Job! I love your dedication.
