Moving Beyond the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl”: Will Women’s Media Misrepresentation Ever End?

Hello! I’m so excited to start and present the beginning of my inquiry project for this semester! The question I have chosen to explore is tied closely to gender roles and societal norms. Like stated in my title, my question is: Will women’s media misrepresentation ever end?

Throughout my life, I’ve always noticed some things that didn’t seem exactly right, whether it appeared in a film I saw, a book I read, an article, anything. I’ve noticed that often women are represented in so many different ways, and not every single one of those ways is incredibly considerate, or even accurate. Now, I completely understand that it’s not only women that can get misrepresented, but as a girl myself, and as someone incredibly interested in media representation and human rights, I am most interested in this topic. Moreover, there had been a specific moment in one of my classes recently that made me even more keen on researching this topic. In one of my classes, we had been tasked with brainstorming famous literary “mentor” figures. My class had come up with characters like Obi Wan Kenobi, Mr. Miyagi, Dumbledore, Yoda, Gandalf, and so forth. By the end, we had a list of around twelve different characters, and only two of those twelve were women.

As I continue to work on my project, I hope to explore all the different areas of media and representation, like journalism, film, literature, even fashion. I think this will be a very interesting project for me, and I hope someone else may like it too!

Thank you for reading!
